CITY LORE'S MISSION IS TO FOSTER NEW YORK CITY - AND AMERICA'S - LIVING CULTURAL HERITAGE THROUGH EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS. WE DOCUMENT, PRESENT AND ADVOCATE FOR NEW YORK CITY'S GRASSROOTS CULTURES TO ENSURE THEIR LIVING LEGACY IN STORIES AND HISTORIES, PLACES AND TRADITIONS. WE WORK IN FOUR CULTURAL DOMAINS: URBAN FOLKLORE AND HISTORY; PRESERVATION; ARTS EDUCATION; AND GRASSROOTS POETRY TRADITIONS. IN EACH OF THESE REALMS, WE SEE OURSELVES AS FURTHERING CULTURAL EQUITY AND MODELING A BETTER WORLD WITH PROJECTS AS DYNAMIC AND DIVERSE AS NEW YORK CITY ITSELF.
IN 2019, CITY LORE CONTINUED TO FURTHER ITS MISSION TO FOSTER NEW YORK CITY AND AMERICA'S LIVING CULTURAL HERITAGE THROUGH EDUCATION AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS. OUR IN-SCHOOL PROGRAMS REACHED OVER 7,000 PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH LONG TERM ARTS RESIDENCIES, WHICH INCLUDED: ROOTS, ROUTES & RHYTHMS FUNDED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND FROM HOMER TO HIP HOP WHICH INTRODUCED SCHOOL STUDENTS TO SPOKEN WORD POETRY. URBAN EXPLORERS ALLOWED AFTER A GROUP OF 25 UNDERSERVED STUDENTS TO RESEARCH AND TELL STORIES OF THE CITY'S DIFFERENT COMMUNITIES. OUR PUBLIC EXHIBITS INCLUDED: WATERFRONT HEROES, WHICH HIGHLIGHTS 10 ARTIST/ACTIVISTS WORKING IN THE BRONX, LOWER MANHATTAN, BROOKLYN, STATEN ISLAND AND LONG ISLAND WHO ARE PRESERVING THE WATERFRONT IN KEY WAYS: GRAFFITI PIONEERS, WHICH ACKNOWLEDGED THE IMPORTANT WORK OF THREE OF THE MOST ORIGINAL EARLY GRAFFITI PIONEERS-BAMA (RICHARD ADMIRAL), COCO (ROBERT GUALTIERI) AND PISTOL (LONNIE HELLER)-AS WELL AS SHOWING HOW THEIR WORK HAS CONTINUED TO DEVELOP OVER TIME; AND WRITER AND ARTIST WARREN LEHRER AND INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST/POET DENNIS BERNSTEIN'S EXHIBITION FIVE OCEANS IN A TEASPOON. MORE THAN 40 PUBLIC PERFORMANCES, DISCUSSIONS AND SCREENINGS WERE HOSTED IN OUR GALLERY/COMMUNITY CENTER AT 56 E. FIRST STREET AS WELL AS AT THE BRONX MUSIC HERITAGE LAB THAT CITY LORE HELPS TO CURATE. THESE INCLUDED: ROBERT GURBO ON ANDRE KERTSZ: THE QUINTESSENTIAL NEW YORKER, A TALK THAT OFFERED AN INTIMATE AND UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE ON PHOTOGRAPHER ANDR KERTSZ; FEED TIME, A ONE WOMAN SHOW WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY ANNIE RACHELE LANZILLOTTO AND; FROM THE AURES TO NEW YORK: INDIGENOUS ALGERIAN DANCE WORKSHOP AND COUSCOUS.
