AT CIVIC HALL LABS, WE COLLABORATIVELY DESIGN AND DEVELOP TECHNOLOGY PILOTS THAT HAVE MEASURABLE IMPACT AND THE POTENTIAL TO SCALE. WE BELIEVE THAT 21ST CENTURY DIGITAL TOOLS HAVE TREMENDOUS POTENTIAL TO ADVANCE THE PUBLIC GOOD WHEN DESIGNED, DEVELOPED, AND IMPLEMENTED THROUGH INCLUSIVE PROCESSES THAT ALLOW SECTOR EXPERTS, THE PUBLIC, GOVERNMENT, AND PHILANTHROPY TO COLLABORATE WITH DATA SCIENTISTS, DESIGNERS, AND DEVELOPERS. CURRENTLY, OUR WORK IS ORGANIZED INTO FIVE CORE PROGRAMS: ADVANCEMENT OF CIVIC TECHNOLOGY, MEMBERSHIP, EVENTS, DIGITAL LEARNING, AND COLLABORATIVE SPACE.
CIVIC HALL LABS COLLABORATIVELY DESIGNS, BUILDS, AND PILOTS TECHNOLOGY FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD AND HELPS OTHERS DO THE SAME.
CIVIC HALL AT UNION SQUARE - SLATED TO OPEN IN LATE 2021, WITH IN-DEPTH PLANNING STARTED IN LATE 2017, CIVIC HALL @ UNION SQUARE WILL BE A NEW, DIVERSE, AND INCLUSIVE 21ST CENTURY COMMUNITY CENTER FOCUSED ON TECHNOLOGY, CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, AND A MORE EQUITABLE FUTURE FOR ALL. IT WILL BE HOUSED ON SIX FLOORS AND INCLUDE A 40,000 SQUARE FOOT COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY SPACE, WITH A STATE-OF-THE-ART 400-SEAT CONFERENCE AND EVENTS CENTER. THE OTHER 40,000 SQUARE FEET WILL BE DEDICATED TO CIVIC HALL'S DIGITAL LEARNING CENTER, WHERE DOZENS OF THE CITY'S BEST-IN-CLASS DIGITAL WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATIONS PROVIDING SERVICES TO UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS WILL SHARE 18 MODERN CLASSROOMS AND OTHER RESOURCES. CIVIC HALL LABS, INC. WILL ALSO DEVELOP AND PROVIDE MUCH-NEEDED DIGITAL SKILLS TRAININGS TO NONPROFIT AND GOVERNMENT PROFESSIONALS. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THIS NEW TRAINING CENTER WILL SERVE AN ESTIMATED 50,000 PEOPLE A YEAR; PROVIDING THEM WITH DIGITAL SKILLS, ACCESS TO JOBS, AND OTHER OPPORTUNITIES. TENS OF THOUSANDS MORE WILL ALSO ATTEND EVENTS AND PARTICIPATE IN WORKSHOPS CONNECTING THEM TO NEW YORK'S GROWING TECH ECOSYSTEM.CIVIC HALL BROKE GROUND IN AUGUST 2019 ON THE UNION SQUARE BUILDING. WITH THE HELP OF THE MASS DESIGN GROUP, THE ORGANIZATION KICKED OFF A HUMAN-CENTERED DESIGN PROCESS AIMING TO ENSURE THAT THE SPACE WOULD BE DESIGNED IN CLOSE COLLABORATION WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. A SERIES OF DESIGN AND BRAINSTORMING SESSIONS, AS WELL AS INTERVIEWS WITH STAKEHOLDERS, TOOK PLACE OVER THE SUMMER. IN ADDITION, WORKING INTENSIVELY WITH A GROUP OF ARCHITECTS AND DESIGNERS, CIVIC HALL PRODUCED A DETAILED DESIGN FOR THE DIGITAL LEARNING CENTER, CONFERENCE AND EVENTS CENTER, AND COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY SPACE ENVISIONED FOR THE SIX FLOORS OF CIVIC HALL AT UNION SQUARE. CIVIC HALL ALSO CONDUCTED A PRE-CAMPAIGN STUDY FOR A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN.
DIGITAL LEARNING CENTER - SEEKS TO HELP NONPROFITS AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES OPTIMIZE THEIR INTERNAL TECHNOLOGY CAPACITIES. CIVIC HALL LABS, INC. PARTNERS WITH LEADING WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROVIDERS AND EMPLOYERS TO ENSURE LOW-RESOURCED NEW YORKERS HAVE THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO RETAIN TECH JOBS THAT SUPPORT ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY.IN 2019, CIVIC HALL TRAINED OVER 250 NONPROFIT PROFESSIONALS IN DIGITAL SKILLS, IN ADDITION, CIVIC HALL BUILT PARTNERSHIPS WITH DOZENS OF NEW YORK CITY'S MOST SUCCESSFUL WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROVIDERS, INCLUDING GENERAL ASSEMBLY, FEDCAP, CODE TO WORK, AND CUNY TO BUILD THEIR CAPACITY TO TRAIN THE UN- AND UNDER-EMPLOYED TO BE JOB READY IN THE 21ST CENTURY ECONOMY. INFORMED BY OUR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT ECOSYSTEM REPORT, WE PARTNERED WITH PER SCHOLAS ON A PILOT PROGRAM SERVING 150 INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE UNDER-REPRESENTED IN THE TECH FIELD WITH THE SKILLS NECESSARY TO SECURE ONE OF NYC'S 161,000 HIGH-TECH JOBS. IN NOVEMBER 2019, CIVIC HALL AND COGNIZANT US FOUNDATION RELEASED A REPORT ON NYC'S TECH OPPORTUNITY GAP. THE REPORT, TITLED NYC'S TECH OPPORTUNITY GAP: STRENGTHENING PATHWAYS AND COLLABORATION WITHIN HIGH-TECH WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT, WAS DEVELOPED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HR&A ADVISORS AND RELEASED AT A PRESS EVENT ON NOVEMBER 6. THE EVENT FEATURED COGNIZANT US FOUNDATION BOARD MEMBER ALLEN SHAHEEN; GALE BREWER, MANHATTAN BOROUGH PRESIDENT; AND JAMES PATCHETT, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF THE NYC ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION.
