FOR more than FIVE DECADES, THE CROHN'S & COLITIS FOUNDATION ("THE FOUNDATION") HAS BEEN DEDICATED TO ITS MISSION OF FINDING A CURE FOR CROHN'S DISEASE AND ULCERATIVE COLITIS AND IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS AFFECTED BY THESE DISEASES. THE FOUNDATION HAS DEFINED ITSELF BY SPONSORING THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST RESEARCHERS RESULTING IN GROUNDBREAKING STUDIES AND RESEARCH INITIATIVES TO ADVANCE THE UNDERSTANDING AND TREATMENT OF INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES ("IBD").
To cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases.
THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES INFORMATION AND EDUCATION IN AN EFFORT TO REACH THE MORE THAN 3 MILLION IBD PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES THROUGH A VARIETY OF PERIODICALS (TAKE CHARGE, UNDER THE MICROSCOPE), AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS, LOCAL CHAPTERS, ITS WEBCASTS, AND THROUGH ITS WEBSITE. THE FOUNDATION ALSO REACHES ITS MANY MEMBERS WITH EXCLUSIVE MAILINGS, ELECTRONIC MAIL, AND SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS. THE FOUNDATION ALSO OFFERS PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION ON INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASES, ITS IBD JOURNAL, AND HEALTH PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOPS. REVENUES REPORTED AS PROGRAM SERVICE REVENUE OF $473,595 REPRESENTS CAMP REGISTRATION FEES FOR WORKSHOPS/CAMP PROGRAMS RUN FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES AFFECTED BY EITHER CROHN'S DISEASE OR ULCERATIVE COLITIS. SINCE ITS INCEPTION, THE FOUNDATION HAS BEEN FIRMLY COMMITTED TO FUNDING RESEARCH THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CHANGE THE LIVES OF PATIENTS WITH IBD. - COLLECTIVELY KNOWN AS INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE (IBD). THERE ARE TWO MAIN RESEARCH CATEGORIES. BASIC RESEARCH EXPLORES THE SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATIONS OF THE DISEASES. IT ANSWERS SUCH QUESTIONS AS: WHAT IS THE UNDERLYING CAUSE OF CROHN'S AND Ulcerative COLITIS? WHICH GENES ARE INVOLVED IN THESE DISEASES? ALTHOUGH BASIC RESEARCH IS COMPLEX AND CAN BE DIFFICULT FOR LAYPERSONS TO UNDERSTAND, THESE STUDIES WILL ULTIMATELY LEAD TO THE CURE FOR IBD. CLINICAL RESEARCH DETERMINES WHICH MEDICAL AND SURGICAL OPTIONS WORK BEST FOR PATIENTS.- THE FOUNDATION BRINGS TOGETHER PATIENTS, CAREGIVERS AND THE FINEST MINDS IN THE INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY (BOTH BASIC AND CLINICAL), TO DESIGN EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND SET THE RESEARCH AGENDA. - THE FOUNDATION INVESTS IN HUMAN RESOURCES: IT TAKES 10 YEARS TO "BUILD" A FULL-FLEDGED, SENIOR INVESTIGATOR. TO MAKE SURE THAT THE MOST TALENTED RESEARCHERS ENTER AND REMAIN IN THE FIELD OF IBD, THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES RESEARCH TRAINING AWARDS TO DEVELOP THE NEXT GENERATION OF INVESTIGATORS. MANY OF TODAY'S MOST PROMINENT RESEARCHERS RECEIVED TRAINING AWARDS FROM THE FOUNDATION EARLY IN THEIR CAREERS. - As part of its drive to push the boundaries of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) research, the Foundation publishes its Challenges in IBD Research report to update the Foundations research agenda and identify new research priorities.
