For over 25 years, Dancing Classrooms has cultivated essential life skills in hundreds of thousands of children across the globe through the joyful art and practice of social dance. Our vision is to create schools and communities where every child is connected, respected and provided a safe environment in which to thrive. Through standards-based, school-based and online residencies, we use the vocabulary of social dance to foster respect, teamwork, focus, motivation, confidence and a sense of accomplishment, which we hope to bring every child. In 2020, we expanded our program to meet the needs of remote learners through the Homeroom Edition online residency and Zoom-based instruction. In addition, Dancing Classrooms offers advanced level classes for motivated young dancers on weekends, after school, and during school breaks to keep young people moving and growing.
Dancing Classrooms Core Residency:Dancing Classrooms Core Residency program cultivates essential life skills through the joyful practice of social dance in school-based and online programs. Students learn social and ballroom dances and their cultural histories, which build connection, confidence, motivation and understanding of diverse cultures. Dancing Classrooms Teaching Artists partner with educators to create environments that offer young people a place to thrive. The programs core values of respect, compassion and safe space for expression allow for a transformative student experience. Principals, teachers and parents have praised our program for developing important skills and behaviors in their students, including civility, respect, teamwork and self-discipline.
Dancing Classrooms Academy: Students who have completed a Dancing Classrooms residency or are interested in starting their social dance journey with us are invited to participate in the Academy, which takes place on weekends and school breaks. These extension classes provide participants the opportunity to take their dance and leadership skills to the next level, learn more styles from around the globe, work with a variety of DC Teaching Artists, and build friendships with peers from across NYCs five boroughs.
DC Global Network:The DC Global Network provides ongoing support for the Dancing Classrooms affiliate sites around the globe, including: curriculum and marketing materials development, teaching artist and site director training workshops, and monthly office hours. DC facilitates cross-site sharing to strengthen best practices across the network.
