The Design Trust for Public Space is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the future of public space in NYC. Our projects bring together city agencies, community groups and private sector experts to make a lasting impact, through design on how New Yorkers live, work and play.
Design Trust for Public Space conducted significant work on: Plaza Stewards Program, El-Space Forum and post project work, in addition to the major projects below. We held a public program as part of NYCxDesign Discover El-Space, three salons of the Design Trust alumni network Fellows Forum, and organized two Public Space Potlucks.
Opening the Edge $58,870:Opening the Edge is a project of the Design Trust, in partnership with the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA); proposed by Artist Jane Greengold to create a public space prototype in an underutilized grassy area of Lillian Wald Houses on the Lower East Side. Through the first phase of the project (2016-17), Design Trust and its fellows, Emmanuel Oni, Destiny Mata, and Rebecca Hill, brought together a group of Wald residents, known as the Community Design Team (CDT), to discuss how they would like to use the site, provide guidance on local issues and maintenance concerns, and develop design concepts for the prototype. Together, they have created a design for an accessible and welcoming public space for a fenced-in area located between 3rd and 4th streets on Avenue D. In 2018, the CDT created an RFP to bring a local artist on to the fellows team and ultimately selected Lee Jimenez to incorporate local history and culture into art components for the prototype. The CDT and Fellows team have presented the design to their neighbors at several public events throughout the process. In 2019, we held 3 more meetings with the Community Design Team in order to finalize details and plan for programming and stewardship of the space. We also attended public events such as Lillian Walds Family Day & Loisaida Festival to share renderings of the future site with the larger neighborhood. The Fellows team met with Nancy Owens Studio to finalize materials for the set of Design Drawings for the project. In June 2019, we received our first ever capital funding award of $680,000 from Speaker Corey Johnson and City Council Member Carlina Rivera, and NYC Department of Cultural Affairs to build the open space prototype.
Under the Elevated $42,998:In 2013, the Design Trust and NYC DOT partnered on Under the Elevated: Reclaiming Space, Connecting Communities to investigate the potential of el-space. The project analyzed the hundreds of miles of elevated transportation infrastructure in the five boroughs and documented improvements that could be made to the space beneath. In 2015, the first pilot project was sited in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, in partnership with Industry City, and Design Trust selected of three Fellows having expertise in urban design, landscape architecture, and lighting design. The Sunset Park pilot launched in June 2018 and connected residents to the waterfront, increased environmental health, and enhanced pedestrian safety for residents of Sunset Park and workers at Industry City and adjacent sites. It tested urban design strategies, replicable lighting and green infrastructure, and informed a future NYC DOT capital project at the site, and other under the elevated locations citywide. Following this, Design Trust and DOT launched two other pilot projects in Long Island City with Rockrose, and in the Rockaways with the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance (now RISE). These pilots tested replicable green infrastructure, lighting, and environmental stewardship practices, later informing DOTs creation of the El-Space Program. Design Trust and DOT also convened forward-thinking individuals, community groups, and government agencies in cities across the continent and internationally at the El-Space Forum in order to establish key values to guide el-space projects, identify significant obstacles through project case studies, share knowledge and experience, and develop innovative strategies for creative, practical, and equitable solutions to benefit urban communities throughout North America and the globe. Lessons learned through the Forum laid the groundwork, for Design Trust and NYCDOT to develop the El-Space Toolkit. In 2019, Design Trust for Public Space in partnership with NYC Department of Transportation produced and published the El-Space Toolkit. The El-Space Toolkit features 21 topical case studies from 11 cities across North America that demonstrate approaches to various typologies of el-space, including linear pathways, crossings, and commercial corridors/market spaces. The Toolkit highlights the range of potential of el-space, from enhanced infrastructure to destination parks and trails. The toolkit also covers the lifecycle of developing and implementing el-space projects, highlighting lessons learned for this emerging field from pilot sites in New York city, with exemplary practices and considerations on how to improve el-space conditions. The toolkit launch is a culmination of the second phase of this partnership which began with the Under the Elevated project in 2013.
