Organizations Filed Purposes:
FOUNDED IN 1920, THE ESU IS A NONPROFIT, NONPOLITICAL ORGANIZATION, WHICH UTILIZES ENGLISH AS A CATALYST TO FOSTER GLOBAL UNDERSTANDING AND GOOD WILL BY PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE FOR STUDENTS, EDUCATORS, AND RECENT IMMIGRANTS.ESU MEMBERS WORK TOGETHER LOCALLY AND NATIONALLY THROUGH A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS. ESU NATIONAL PROGRAMS ARE SUPPORTED BY ITS UNRESTRICTED ENDOWMENT AND CORPORATE AND FOUNDATION GRANTS AS WELL AS BY THE GENEROSITY OF ITS MEMBERS, WHO BENEFIT FROM THE PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE GAINED FROM THE ESU ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS WHILE THEY PROVIDE FINANCIAL AND VOLUNTEER SUPPORT TO SUSTAIN THE ESU'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS.
THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION (ESU) EMPLOYS ENGLISH AS A CATALYST TO FOSTER GLOBAL UNDERSTANDING AND GOOD WILL THROUGH EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND CULTURAL EXCHANGE PROGRAMS. IN A SHRINKING WORLD DOMINATED BY DOLLARS AND DIGITS, UNPRECEDENTED NUMBERS OF DISPLACED PERSONS, THE ESU BELIEVES IN BUILDING A BETTER WORLD THROUGH THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE. WE WORK TO INSPIRE COMMON BONDS, PERSON-TO-PERSON, ONE CONVERSATION, ONE PRESENTATION AND ONE EXCHANGE AT A TIME. BY PROMOTING CREATIVE AND CONFIDENT CIVIL DISCOURSE, WE ENABLE PARTICIPANTS TO RISE TO THEIR POTENTIAL AS INDIVIDUALS, THRIVE AS GLOBAL CITIZENS, AND JOIN WORLDWIDE IN PURSUING CONDITIONS FOR PEACE.
BRANCH EVENTS AND MEETINGS:THE ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION (ESU) ANNUAL CONFERENCE DRAWS MEMBERS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR AN ENJOYABLE GATHERING OF LONG STANDING AND NEW MEMBERS WITH PRODUCTIVE DISCUSSIONS ABOUT ADVANCING THE ESU EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. BUSINESS SESSIONS INCLUDE THE SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, A WORKING CONCLAVE FOR THE NATIONAL BOARD AND BRANCH OFFICERS, AND REGIONAL MEETINGS OF THE ESU BRANCHES. BEYOND THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE, ESU NATIONAL MAY HOST VARIOUS MEETINGS FOR BRANCHES INCLUDING LECTURES, HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS, AND INFORMATION SESSION ON OPERATIONS/PROGRAMS. AS A RESULT OF COVID-19, MANY OF THIS EVENTS WERE MOVED TO VIRTUAL EVENTS IN THE SPRING AND SUMMER OF CALENDAR YEAR 2021.
THE ANDREW ROMAY NEW IMMIGRANT CENTER (ARNIC):THE ANDREW ROMAY NEW IMMIGRANT CENTER (ARNIC) IS COMMITTED TO IMPROVING THE LIVES OF NEW IMMIGRANTS BY PROVIDING A WELCOMING ENVIRONMENT, RESOURCES, AND INFORMATION TO HELP THEM IMPROVE THEIR ENGLISH LANGUAGE SKILLS TO EXPLORE WORK AND STUDY OPPORTUNITIES, NETWORK, PURSUE CITIZENSHIP, AND ACQUIRE CULTURAL FLUENCY IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE FULLY IN AMERICAN SOCIETY. DURING THE 2020 FISCAL YEAR, IN ADDITION TO SPECIALLY TAILORED ENGLISH LANGUAGE SPEAKING AND WRITING CLASSES, ARNIC PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED THE ANNUAL THANKSGIVING DINNER, THE LAUNCH OF A PERSONALIZED PROFESSIONAL MENTORING PROGRAM, FIELD TRIPS TO NEW YORK STATE COURTS AND CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS. SPECIAL WORKSHOPS WERE PRESENTED ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP, ONLINE SAFETY, SOCIAL MEDIA, AND FINANCIAL LITERACY. LOCAL BANKING INSTITUTIONS HELD CAREER DAYS THAT FOCUSED ON RESUME BUILDING AND INTERVIEWING. IN YEARS PAST, MEMBERS HAVE ATTENDED SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK PERFORMANCES, TOURED THE UNITED NATIONS, AND PARTICIPATED IN OTHER AMERICAN CULTURAL EXPERIENCES. IN FISCAL YEAR 2020 THE PROGRAM WAS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPACTED BY COVID -19 AND ALL PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS FROM MARCH 2020 FORWARD WERE MOVED ONLINE. NONETHELESS, THERE WERE 305 ARNIC SCHOLARS FROM 60 COUNTRIES, PARTICIPATING IN 65 WORKSHOPS. WE ANTICIPATE A RETURN TO SOME IN-PERSON PROGRAMMING IN FISCAL YEAR 2021.
