Organizations Filed Purposes: SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN 1963, FOUNDATION FOR CONTEMPORARY ARTS' MISSION HAS BEEN TO ENCOURAGE, SPONSOR AND PROMOTE INNOVATIVE WORK IN THE ARTS CREATED AND PRESENTED BY INDIVIDUALS, GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS. THROUGH A NOMINATION PROCESS, INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS, COLLECTIVES AND PERFORMING GROUPS WORKING IN DANCE, MUSIC/SOUND, THEATER/PERFORMANCE ART, POETRY AND VISUAL ARTS ARE AWARDED UNRESTRICTED GRANTS FOR PROJECTS OF THEIR OWN CHOOSING. GRANTS ARE ALSO GIVEN TO PRESENTING AND SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS AND A MODEST FUND IS MAINTAINED TO HELP ARTISTS WITH UNEXPECTED EMERGENCIES.

TO ASSIST AND ENCOURAGE INNOVATION, EXPERIMENTATION, AND POTENTIAL IN THE ARTS

GRANTS TO ARTISTS:THESE UNRESTRICTED, $40,000 CASH AWARDS ARE INTENDED TO PROVIDE RECIPIENTS WITH THE FINANCIAL MEANS TO ENGAGE IN WHATEVER ARTISTIC ENDEAVORS THEY WISH TO PURSUE. RECIPIENTS ARE CHOSEN ANNUALLY THROUGH A CONFIDENTIAL NOMINATION AND SELECTION PROCESS. THE FOUNDATION INVITES DOZENS OF ARTISTS AND ARTS PROFESSIONALS TO SERVE AS NOMINATORS AND TO PROPOSE ANONYMOUSLY ONE EXCEPTIONAL INDIVIDUAL, COLLECTIVE, OR PERFORMING GROUP WHOM THEY BELIEVE DESERVES AND WOULD BENEFIT FROM A SUBSTANTIAL AWARD. THEN, A SEPARATE SELECTION COMMITTEE" OF ARTISTS AND ARTS PROFESSIONALS SELECTS GRANTEES BASED ON THE MERIT AND IMAGINATIVENESS OF THEIR WORK AND THE IMPACT SUCH RECOGNITION AND SUPPORT MIGHT HAVE AT THIS POINT IN THEIR CAREERS. IN 2019, A TOTAL OF 18 GRANTS WERE MADE TO INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS. WITHIN GRANTS TO ARTISTS FIVE ENDOWED AWARDS, THE ROY LICHTENSTEIN, ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG, DOROTHEA TANNING AND C.D. WRIGHT AWARDS (ALL ANNUAL), THE MERCE CUNNINGHAM AWARD (BIENNIAL) AND ONE ANNUALLY SUPPORTED AWARD, THE CY TWOMBLY AWARD FOR POETRY, ARE MADE THROUGH GRANTS TO ARTISTS, IN MEMORY OF THEIR NAMESAKES. IN 2019, SIX NAMED GRANTS WERE RESPECTIVELY MADE TO INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS.

EMERGENCY GRANTS:THESE GRANTS ARE AWARDED ON AN ONGOING BASIS TO EMERGING ARTISTS AND COLLECTIVES THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY WHO ARE IN NEED OF TIMELY, URGENT SUPPORT. THE ONLY PROGRAM OF ITS KIND, EMERGENCY GRANTS PROVIDES QUICK, GRASSROOTS SUPPORT TO ARTISTS WHO HAVE UNEXPECTED EXPENSES WHEN PROJECTS ARE CLOSE TO COMPLETION OR SUDDEN OPPORTUNITIES TO PRESENT WORK TO THE PUBLIC. EMERGENCY GRANTS TYPICALLY RANGE FROM $500 TO $2,500; REQUESTS ARE REVIEWED MONTHLY BY A VOLUNTEER PANEL OF ESTABLISHED ARTISTS. IN 2019, 179 GRANTS WERE MADE TOTALING $300,001.

THIS NEW GRANT IS MADE ANNUALLY TO CREATE A SOLO EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITY FOR A CONTEMPORARY VISUAL ARTIST AT A U.S. ART MUSEUM OR UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE ART GALLERY. THE 2019 AWARD WAS $40,000.
