THE MISSION OF FRIENDS OF NEW YORK CITY NURSE-FAMILY PARTNERSHIP IS TO IMPROVE LIVES FOR BABIES BORN INTO LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS BY PROVIDING ADDITIONAL FUNDS AND PROGRAMMING FOR THE NATIONALLY RENOWNED NURSE FAMILY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM IN NEW YORK CITY. WE ASSIST THE LOW-INCOME FIRST-TIME MOTHERS WHO ENROLL IN NFP IN SEVERAL WAYS. WE PAY FOR ADDITIONAL EDUCATION THAT WILL ENABLE THEM TO PROVIDE BETTER LIVES FOR THEIR BABIES. WE ORGANIZE AND PAY FOR OPPORTUNITIES FOR SOCIALIZATION AND ENRICHMENT THAT LEAD TO INCREASED SOCIAL SUPPORT. AND, FINALLY, WE PAY FOR ADDITIONAL EDUCATION, TRAINING AND RECOGNITION FOR THE NURSES WHO ARE THE ESSENCE OF THE NFP PROGRAM.
TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF BABIES AND THEIR MOTHERS BY PROVIDING ENHANCED BENEFITS FOR THE RENOWNED NURSE-FAMILY PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM IN NEW YORK CITY.
HEART'S DESIRE AWARDS - FINANCING FOR EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS AND RESOURCES. ONE OF THE FUNCTIONS OF NFP NURSES IS TO HELP PARTICIPANTS ENVISION A FUTURE FOR THEMSELVES AS PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS EARNING A LIVING WAGE. FOR MANY OF THEM, NO ONE HAS EVER TALKED TO THEM ABOUT A FUTURE LIKE THAT- A LIFE THAT CONSISTS OF MORE THAN DAILY STRUGGLE AND A DEAD-END JOB. OUR HEART'S DESIRE PROGRAM ENHANCEMENT MEANS THAT THE CRITICAL GOAL SETTING AND CONFIDENCE BUILDING THAT THE NURSES DO- WORK THAT LEADS THE WOMEN TO PURSUE PATHS OUT OF POVERTY- CAN COME TO FRUITION. OUR DONORS PROVIDE THE FINANCIAL RESOURCES THAT ENABLE MOMS TO ACT ON THEIR GOALS. FOR THE SMALL NUMBER OF WOMEN WHO WOULD HAVE ENROLLED IN EDUCATION EVEN WITHOUT FUNDING, THE AWARDS RELIEVE THE ENORMOUS ADDED STRESS THAT THEY WOULD HAVE ENDURED. THIS KIND OF STRESS RELIEF BENEFITS BOTH MOTHER AND BABY AND IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT IN A BABY'S EARLY YEARS. IF WE HADN'T COME INTO BEING IN 2016, THE HEART'S DESIRE PROGRAM (WHICH HAD BEEN PREVIOUSLY SUPPORTED BY A SUCCESSION OF FOUNDATIONS) WOULD HAVE ENDED. INSTEAD, FROM OUR INCEPTION TO THE PRESENT TIME WE HAVE PROVIDED RESOURCES FOR JUST OVER 200 WOMEN. THIS YEAR WE AWARDED 93 AWARDS AVERAGING CLOSE TO 1,000 EACH.
CLIENT PROGRAMMING - NURSES REPORT THAT A MAJORITY OF THEIR CLIENTS ARE LONELY AND ISOLATED. NOT ONLY DO MANY OF THEM LACK SUPPORTIVE FAMILY, BUT THEY LACK NETWORKS OF FRIENDS. IF THEY EVER HAD SUCH A NETWORK IN THE PAST, THEIR NEW CIRCUMSTANCE OF PREGNANCY AND MOTHERHOOD OFTEN CUTS THEM OFF FROM THESE INDIVIDUALS BOTH PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY. THEREFORE, THE NURSES HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THE MOMS NEED TO HAVE AVENUES TO MEET OTHER WOMEN LIKE THEMSELVES, WOMEN WHO DO NOT JUDGE THEM, WITH WHOM THEY CAN SHARE EXPERIENCES AND GAIN INSIGHTS. WHICH ONE OF US DID NOT GAIN EMOTIONAL FORTITUDE AND WISDOM FROM PARENTING GROUPS AS WE TRIED TO RAISE OUR FIRST CHILD? MOST OF US DESCRIBE THE WOMEN'S GROUPS THAT WE EXPERIENCED AS "A LIFELINE." FOR THESE REASONS, FRIENDS HELPS PAY FOR SEVERAL LARGE GATHERINGS EVERY YEAR AT EACH NFP SITE AND ALSO RUNS ADDITIONAL, SMALLER AND MORE INTIMATE LEARN, EAT AND PLAY (LEAP) SESSIONS TO BRING MOTHERS TOGETHER ON A MORE REGULAR BASIS. OUR EVALUATIONS SHOW THAT THE MOMS TOP REASON FOR COMING ARE 1) TO FIND OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEIR CHILDREN TO BE EXPOSED TO OTHER CHILDREN AND 2) TO MEET OTHER MOMS. WE PLANNED AND PAID FOR (IN WHOLE OR IN PART) A TOTAL OF 25 SUCH SESSIONS LAST YEAR. WE HAVE ALSO PAID FOR COOL CULTURE PASSES TO ALLOW CLIENTS FREE ENTRY TO THE CITY'S MULTITUDE OF MUSEUMS.
CLIENT NECESSITIES - WHILE NOT EVERY PARTICIPANT MAKES USE OF THE RESOURCES IDENTIFIED PREVIOUSLY, EVERY SINGLE PROGRAM PARTICIPANT NEEDS DIAPERS ONCE HER BABY IS BORN. DIAPERING A NEW BABY CAN COST MORE THAN 1,000/YEAR. YET MOST OF THE WOMEN DO NOT EVEN HAVE A SPARE 25. WE HAVE LEARNED THAT EXISTING COMMUNITY RESOURCES ARE NOT ADEQUATELY MEETING THE NEED FOR DIAPERS. ONE NURSE TALKED ABOUT SEEING A BABY WITH TWO UNDERSIZED DIAPERS TAPED TOGETHER TO MAKE DO THIS YEAR WE PUT 4,700 TOWARD THE PURCHASE OF CLOSE TO 14,000 DIAPERS, TO THE GREAT RELIEF AND DELIGHT OF MOMS AND NURSES.
