FRIENDS OF THE HIGH LINE WORKS TO BUILD AND MAINTAIN AN EXTRAORDINARY PUBLIC SPACE ON THE HIGH LINE. WE SEEK TO PROTECT THE ENTIRE HISTORIC STRUCTURE, TRANSFORMING AN ESSENTIAL PIECE OF NEW YORK'S INDUSTRIAL PAST AND INSPIRING NEW WAYS OF THINKING ABOUT THE CITY, PARKS, PUBLIC SPACE, PRESERVATION, AND COMMUNITY. WE PROVIDE VIRTUALLY ALL OF THE HIGH LINE'S ANNUAL OPERATING BUDGET AND ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF THE PARK, PURSUANT TO A LICENSE AGREEMENT WITH THE NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF PARKS & RECREATION. THROUGH EXCELLENCE IN OPERATIONS, STEWARDSHIP, INNOVATIVE PROGRAMMING, AND WORLD-CLASS DESIGN, WE SEEK TO ENGAGE THE VIBRANT AND DIVERSE COMMUNITY ON AND AROUND THE HIGH LINE.
FRIENDS OF THE HIGH LINE IS A NON-PROFIT PARK CONSERVANCY RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING AND OPERATING AN EXTRAORDINARY PUBLIC SPACE ON THE HIGH LINE. THE HIGH LINE IS A 1.45-MILE ELEVATED FREIGHT RAIL LINE TRANSFORMED INTO A PUBLIC PARK ON MANHATTAN'S WEST SIDE.
HIGH LINE PLANNING, CONSTRUCTION AND CAPITAL REPAIRS:IN 2018, FRIENDS OF THE HIGH LINE ("FHL") CONTINUED TO WORK ON SEVERAL LARGE-SCALE CAPITAL CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS, ADVANCED THE DESIGN PHASES FOR ADDITIONAL LARGE-SCALE PROJECTS, AND COMPLETED A VARIETY OF CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS ON THE EXISTING HIGH LINE. CONSTRUCTION ON PHASE II OF SECTION 3 BEGAN IN THE SPRING OF 2017. MANY SIGNIFICANT COMPONENTS OF THE PROJECT WERE STARTED IN 2018, INCLUDING SIGNIFICANT CIP WALKING SURFACES, LARGE SCALE PLANTING ZONES, LIGHTING INSTALLATIONS AND INSTALLATION OF THE STRUCTURE TO SUPPORT THE ART PLINTH ON THE SPUR. OTHER KEY AREAS OF THE PROJECT WERE STARTED, INCLUDING THE EAST AND WEST STAIRS LEADING TO THE SPUR. CONSTRUCTION WILL CONTINUE THROUGH SPRING OF 2019. THIS IS THE LAST PIECE OF THE HIGH LINE CURRENTLY NOT ACCESSIBLE TO THE PUBLIC AND IS SCHEDULED TO OPEN IN MID-2019.FHL FINALIZED DESIGN FOR THE 18TH STREET PLAZA, THE FIRST STREET-LEVEL PARK SPACE CONNECTED TO THE HIGH LINE. CONSTRUCTION IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN 2020.FHL STARTED AND COMPLETED MANY CRITICAL CAPITAL PROJECTS ON BOTH THE HIGH LINE AND AT THE HIGH LINE HEADQUARTERS ("HLHQ") BUILDING AT 820 WASHINGTON STREET. THESE PROJECTS INCLUDED AN EXTENSIVE REDESIGN AND REBUILD OF THE BRIDGE BETWEEN THE HLHQ BUILDING AND THE HIGH LINE ITSELF, SIGNIFICANT REPAIRS TO AND REPAINTING OF THE STAIRS AT 26TH AND 28TH STREETS ON THE HIGH LINE, REPAIRS TO THE 16TH STREET ELEVATOR AND REPLACEMENT OF GATES/FENCING AT 34TH STREET FOLLOWING AN AUTO COLLISION. FOLLOWING A SUCCESSFUL ZONING TEXT CHANGE IN 2017, WHICH ALLOWED US TO MODIFY THE REQUIREMENTS FOR AN ADJACENT DEVELOPMENT TO INCLUDE SUPPORT SPACE FOR THE PARK, CONSTRUCTION BEGAN (BY OTHERS) ON THAT BUILDING AND THAT SUPPORT SPACE IN 2018 AND IS EXPECTED TO BE READY FOR USE IN EARLY 2020.
HIGH LINE OPERATIONS:IN 2018, FHL SUCCESSFULLY OPERATED AND MAINTAINED SECTIONS 1, 2, AND 3 OF THE PARK, FROM GANSEVOORT STREET TO WEST 34TH STREET. FHL CONTINUED TO FOCUS ON MAINTENANCE, CLEANLINESS AND SAFETY OF THE 1.45 MILE PARK TO ENHANCE THE SUPERLATIVE AND WORLD-CLASS VISITOR EXPERIENCE FOR APPROXIMATELY 7.5 MILLION PEOPLE. THIS WORK ENHANCED SAFETY INITIATIVES THAT INVOLVED A CLOSER COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL POLICE PRECINCTS AS WELL AS ADJACENT ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING COLLABORATIVE TABLE TOP DRILLS. THE HORTICULTURE TEAM MANAGED THE GARDENS BY PLANTING OVER 5,000 PERENNIALS, 4,100 BULBS, AND 8 SHRUBS. ALL PLANT MATERIALS WERE COMPOSTED ON-SITE AND WERE THE EXCLUSIVE COMPOST ADDED TO THE GARDENS, THUS ACHIEVING A FULLY SELF-SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPE SYSTEM. THE FACILITIES TEAM OPERATED AND MAINTAINED ALL THE MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL, AND PLUMBING FEATURES OF THE PARK AND HLHQ. THE CUSTODIAL SERVICES TEAM REMOVED OVER 123 TONS OF GARBAGE, AND 55 TONS OF RECYCLING, MAINTAINED CLEAN RESTROOMS YEAR-ROUND, AND POWER WASHED THE HIGH LINE DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS.
PROGRAMMING, ART AND EDUCATION:FHL WELCOMED OVER 40,000 VISITORS TO OVER 350 SCHEDULED PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES. FHL HOSTED A SIX DAY EVENT CALLED THE "MILE LONG OPERA" THAT INCLUDED SIX NONPROFIT PARTNERS, 38 CHOIRS, WITH 1000 SINGERS AND OVER 10,000 ATTENDEES. FHL HAD OVER 7,500 PARTICIPANTS AT OUR CULTURAL PERFORMANCES AND PUBLIC PROGRAMS, OF WHICH MORE THAN 80% WERE NEW YORKERS. PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN SERVED OVER 20,500 KIDS AND CAREGIVERS FROM APRIL THROUGH OCTOBER, THROUGH MONTHLY FAMILY PROGRAMMING, INCLUDED PERFORMANCES AND ART-MAKING ACTIVITIES. FHL LED OVER 100 GUIDED FIELD TRIPS, SERVING OVER 4,000 ADULTS AND CHILDREN. THE HIGH LINE TEEN PROGRAM PROVIDED EMPLOYMENT FOR 30 LOCAL TEENAGERS AND ENGAGED OVER 1,600 NEW YORK CITY YOUTH THROUGH TWO TEEN NIGHT EVENTS. FHL ALSO WORKED WITH 200+ VOLUNTEERS WHO SUPPORTED THE ORGANIZATION THROUGH 4,000 HOURS AS DOCENTS, GREETERS, HORTICULTURAL ASSISTANTS, PLAY PARTNERS, AMBASSADORS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS.FHL COMMISSIONED AND EXHIBITED MORE THAN 37 ART PROJECTS, INCLUDING 7 VIDEO PROGRAMS, 3 ART PERFORMANCES, AND 15 MAJOR COMMISSIONS, WHICH IT HELPED, FABRICATE AND INSTALL, ON THE HIGH LINE. THE ART DEPARTMENT BEGAN WORK ON THE SCULPTURE THAT WILL BE INSTALLED IN NEW SECTION OF THE HIGH LINE CALLED THE SPUR, TO BE INSTALLED IN 2019. FURTHERMORE, FHL SOLIDIFIED PARTNERSHIPS WITH OTHER NYC ART NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, PARTICIPATING IN A FESTIVAL EXHIBITION WITH 13 OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS AND REALIZING A PERFORMANCE IN COLLABORATION WITH THE WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART. FHL CONTINUED ITS WORK ON THE HIGH LINE NETWORK, A GROUP OF INFRASTRUCTURE REUSE PROJECTS-AND THE PEOPLE WHO ARE HELPING THEM COME TO LIFE. FHL CONTINUED ITS WORK WITH NETWORK MEMBERS TO DRAFT AN EQUITABLE IMPACT FRAMEWORK, AND BEST PRACTICES TOOLKIT, RESOURCES INTENDED TO HELP MEMBERS IMPLEMENT A MORE RIGOROUS ASSESSMENT OF THE ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES THEY ARE CREATING. SECONDLY, FHL IN-PERSON CONVENING - IN NEW YORK CITY FOR STAFF MEMBERS OF LOCAL NETWORK PROJECTS, AND ONE IN ATLANTA FOR SENIOR LEADERS.
