Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Gender Equality Law Center ("GELC") was founded to advance laws and policies to break down barriers caused by gender discrimination and stereotyping in all areas of public and private life. GELC believes that all individuals have the right to compete on a level playing field for equal opportunities in work, education, housing, access to public benefits and services, without regard to gender, gender identity and/or sexual orientation. GELC utilizes a unique blend of strategies to accomplish these goals including impact litigation, legislative reform, public policy initiatives and coalition-building, education and legal training.
GELC conducts regular trainings and know your rights presentations to community groups, legal advocates, employee rights organizations, legal advocates and other not for profit groups
GELC's legal work falls into two areas: The first is litigating impact cases involving gender-based discrimination. While all of GELC's litigation seeks to achieve legal and institutional change, almost all of GELC's litigation is on behalf of low or moderate income individuals. GELC's second area of legal work is advising and counseling individuals that are referred to GELC through the organization's free legal hotline and through other organizations and the private bar.
GELC is involved in numerous legislative coaltions to help pass law that will advance the rights of women and LGBTQ individuals. Similarly, GELC is involved in helping to educate the public about important pieces of legislation that impact the lives of New Yorkers.
