Organizations Filed Purposes: HARLEM LACROSSE'S MISSION IS TO EMPOWER THE CHILDREN WHO ARE MOST AT RISK FOR ACADEMIC DECLINE AND DROPOUT TO RISE ABOVE THEIR CHALLENGES AND REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. HARLEM LACROSSE INSPIRES CHILDREN TO DREAM ABOUT TOMORROW WHILE WORKING HARD ON THE FIELD AND IN THE CLASSROOM TODAY.

HARLEM LACROSSE'S MISSION IS TO EMPOWER THE CHILDREN WHO ARE MOST AT RISK FOR ACADEMIC DECLINE AND DROPOUT TO RISE ABOVE THEIR CHALLENGES AND REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.

IN ITS 9TH YEAR OF OPERATION, HARLEM LACROSSE SERVES MORE THAN 1300 STUDENTS IN NEW YORK, BALTIMORE, BOSTON, LOS ANGELES AND PHILADELPHIA, HELPING THEM TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL THROUGH OUR YEAR-ROUND, SCHOOL-BASED, ACADEMICS-FOCUSED LACROSSE PROGRAM. HARLEM LACROSSE PLACES PROGRAM DIRECTORS AT THE SCHOOL SITES WHERE OUR PROGRAMS OPERATE, ALLOWING THEM TO MAINTAIN A CONSTANT PRESENCE IN THE LIVES OF THEIR STUDENTS AS TUTORS, MENTORS, AND COACHES. HARLEM LACROSSE PARTICIPANTS ATTEND REGULAR STUDY HALL AND ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT SESSIONS WITH THEIR PROGRAM DIRECTORS AND DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS, RESULTING IN SIGNIFICANT ACADEMIC GROWTH. ACADEMIC GROWTH:BEING PART OF THE HARLEM LACROSSE TEAM HELPS STUDENTS TO ACTIVATE THE SKILLS AND MINDSETS TO REACH THEIR ACADEMIC POTENTIAL. HL STUDENTS ARE MORE LIKELY THAN TO ATTEND SCHOOL REGULARLY COMPARED WITH THEIR PEERS. THEY WERE PRESENT FOR MORE THAN A WEEK OF ADDITIONAL SCHOOL DAYS THAN THEIR CLASSMATES, ON AVERAGE, WERE HALF AS LIKELY TO BE CHRONICALLY ABSENT, AND WERE 20% LESS LIKELY TO FACE SUSPENSION. BEING IN SCHOOL REGULARLY IS A CRUCIAL FIRST STEP TO ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: 98% OF HARLEM LACROSSE STUDENTS ACHIEVED PASSING GPAS, AND 89% OF ALUMNI GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL (COMPARED WITH 78% OF LOW-INCOME STUDENTS NATION-WIDE). ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENT:HL ATHLETES MADE HUGE GAINS ON THE FIELD IN 2019. ACROSS THE COUNTRY, HARLEM LACROSSE STUDENTS ACHIEVED ABOUT FOUR TIMES AS MUCH GROWTH IN AEROBIC CAPACITY COMPARED WITH PARTICIPANTS IN PEER ORGANIZATIONS, HELPING THEM TO LEAD HEALTHIER LIVES. TWO HARLEM LACROSSE TEAMS MADE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME APPEARANCES IN SPRING 2019, WITH THE COMMODORE JOHN RODGERS GIRLS TAKING HOME THE BALTIMORE CITY CHAMPIONSHIP, AND THE FREDERICK DOUGLASS ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL BOYS TAKING HOME SECOND PLACE AT THE NEW YORK PSAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN THEIR THIRD STATE CHAMPIONSHIP BERTH. SOCIAL EMOTIONAL GROWTH:BOTH PARTICIPANTS AND PARTNERS IDENTIFIED THE PROFOUND IMPACT OF HARLEM LACROSSE ON SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SKILLS. STUDENTS CONSISTENTLY REPORTED THAT HARLEM LACROSSE HELPED THEM TO GROW IN THE ABILITY TO MEET THEIR GOALS (77% SAID THEY GREW A LOT), ABILITY TO WORK WITH OTHERS (68% SAID THEY GREW A LOT), AND PERSEVERANCE (71% SAID THEY GREW A LOT). IN ADDITION, OUR PROGRAMS WERE HIGHLIGHTED AS BRIGHT SPOTS AMONG PEERS BY PARTNERS THE STUDENT SUCCESS NETWORK AND BOSTON AFTER SCHOOL AND BEYOND FOR OUR EFFICACY IN HELPING STUDENTS TO DEVELOP SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SKILLS.LONG-TERM IMPACT:COMPARED WITH STUDENTS OF ALL BACKGROUNDS NATIONWIDE, HL STUDENT-ATHLETES ARE MORE LIKELY TO GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL (89% VS. 85%), ENROLL IN COLLEGE (80% VS. 67%), AND PERSIST IN COLLEGE (87% VS, 74%). ALTHOUGH HARLEM LACROSSE WAS FOUNDED AS A MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM, WE HAVE FOUND THAT A LONG-TERM CONNECTION WITH OUR STUDENTS IS A VITAL DRIVER IN OUR IMPACT. IN 2018, WE APPROVED A THREE-YEAR STRATEGIC PLAN THAT WILL ENSURE THAT EVERY HARLEM LACROSSE MIDDLE SCHOOL PARTICIPANT HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO CONTINUE TO BENEFIT FROM HARLEM LACROSSE IN HIGH SCHOOL, FOLLOWING A SUCCESSFUL PILOT AT FREDERICK DOUGLASS ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL. IN THE FALL OF 2019, WE LAUNCHED TWO ADDITIONAL HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS IN NEW YORK AND BALTIMORE.
