HARLEM STAGE IS A PERFORMING ARTS CENTER THAT CELEBRATES AND PERPETUATES THE UNIQUE AND DIVERSE ARTISTIC LEGACY OF HARLEM AND THE INDELIBLE IMPRESSION IT HAS MADE ON AMERICAN CULTURE. WE PROVIDE OPPORTUNITY, COMMISSIONING AND SUPPORT FOR ARTISTS OF COLOR, MAKE PERFORMANCES EASILY ACCESSIBLE TO ALL AUDIENCES, AND INTRODUCE CHILDREN TO THE RICH DIVERSITY, EXCITEMENT AND INSPIRATION OF THE PERFORMING ARTS.
FOR 37 YEARS, HARLEM STAGE'S UNIQUE FOCUS HAS BEEN TO IDENTIFY VISIONARY ARTISTS OF COLOR AND SUPPORT THEM BY COMMISSIONING, PRESENTING - AND INCREASINGLY IN RECENT YEARS - PRODUCING THEIR VITAL WORK THAT RESPONDS TO THE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CONDITIONS THAT SHAPE OUR LIVES. HARLEM STAGE HAS EARNED A REPUTATION FOR WORLD CLASS PROGRAMMING FEATURING ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING ARTISTS. WE SUSTAIN OUR COMMITMENT TO OUR MISSION WITH A BROAD RANGE OF PROGRAMS ACROSS ALL DISCIPLINES OF THE PERFORMING ARTS.
PRESENTATIONHARLEM STAGE, WHICH THE NEW YORK TIMES HAS CALLED "AN INVALUABLE INCUBATOR OF TALENT," IS THE PREEMINENT HOME FOR ARTISTS OF COLOR TO CREATE AND PRESENT NEW WORK, AND THE ONLY INSTITUTION IN THE NATION DEVOTED EXCLUSIVELY TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW WORK BY THESE ARTISTS. HARLEM STAGE COMMISSIONS AND PRODUCES NEW, INNOVATIVE, SOCIALLY SIGNIFICANT WORKS THROUGH ITS WATERWORKS PROGRAM, AND THEN PRESENTS THE PREMIERES AT THE HARLEM STAGE GATEHOUSE, THROUGH WATERWORKS, HARLEM STAGE SERVES AS CATALYST, CONDUIT AND INCUBATOR OF IDEAS, NOT ONLY BY SUPPORTING ARTISTS, BUT ALSO BY ENGAGING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH RESIDENCY, HUMANITIES AND EDUCATION ACTIVITIES.WE CONTINUE THIS WORK THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS WITH CARNEGIE HALL, THE CLASSICAL THEATRE OF HARLEM, THE HARLEM SCHOOL OF THE ARTS, LIVE ARTS AT THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM, CHAMBER MUSIC AMERICA, MANHATTAN SCHOOL OF MUSIC, THEATER OF WAR AND THE PARK AVENUE ARMORY.
EDUCATIONIN EDUCATION, WE CONTINUED OUR LONGEST RUNNING PRESENTATION SERIES FOR K-12 SCHOOLS WITH PERFORMANCES AT HARLEM STAGE AND BY SENDING ARTISTS INTO THE CLASSROOMS. WE ALSO CONTINUED OUR IN-DEPTH WORK IN LOCAL SCHOOLS CONNECTING THEM TO THESE PROGRAMS AND OUR MAIN STAGE PRODUCTIONS, PARTICULARLY A. PHILIP RANDOLPH HIGH SCHOOL AND PS 161 AND THE WHEELS SCHOOL. OUR ON-GOING COLLABORATION WITH YOUNG AUDIENCES NEW YORK RESULTED IN EXPANDED OFFERINGS WITH THEIR LIVING LIBRARY PROGRAM. WE EXPANDED OUR PROGRAMS TO INCLUDE DEEPER INVESTIGATION OF JAZZ AND BLUES MUSIC, DANCE AND CULTURE, THROUGH OUR RESIDENCY WITH CHRISTIAN SCOTT ATUNDE ADJUAH. AND CREATED GREATER OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO ATTEND DRESS REHEARSALS AND PERFORMANCES OF ESTABLISHED ARTISTS ON OUR SERIES AND TO HAVE DIALOGUE WITH THEM ABOUT THEIR CREATIVE PROCESS.ALL OF THE ABOVE PROGRAMS WERE SUSPENDED AS OF MARCH 15TH IN COMPLIANCE WITH COVID HEALTH RESTRICTIONS. WE DELAYED AND RESCHEDULED SOME OF THESE PROGRAMS UNTIL IT IS SAFE TO RESUME LIVE PROGRAMS AND MANY WERE REPLACED WITH DIGITAL INSTRUCTION AND PROGRAM OFFERINGS.
