HB STUDIO WAS CREATED BY THEATRE ARTISTS. WE BELIEVE IN A PROCESS OF TRAINING THAT IS ESSENTIAL TO ALL THE PERFORMING ARTS. WE OFFER A RIGOROUS, WELL-ROUNDED CURRICULUM OF STUDY FOR COMMITTED STUDENTS OF ALL LEVELS WHERE THE ACTOR'S UNIQUE (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE "O") POTENTIAL IS CULTIVATED AND ENCOURAGED. WE PROVIDE A HAVEN FOR WORKING PROFESSIONALS, FREE FROM COMMERCIAL PRESSURES. WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HB PLAYWRIGHTS FOUNDATION AND THEATRE, WE UPHOLD A STANDARD OF PERFORMANCE THAT CAN PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN SHAPING TODAY'S CONTEMPORARY AND CLASSICAL THEATRE - A STANDARD ENVISIONED BY OUR FOUNDER, ACTOR/DIRECTOR HERBERT BERGHOF, AND CHAMPIONED BY THE ACTOR AND MASTER TEACHER UTA HAGEN.

(A) THE UTA HAGEN INSTITUTE FOR FULL TIME STUDY:(I) HAGEN SUMMER INTENSIVE: 6-WEEK, 5-DAY, FULL-TIME INTENSIVE PROGRAM FOCUSED ON UTA HAGEN'S APPROACH TO ACTING TECHNIQUE AND REHEARSAL PROCESS. DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, THE HAGEN SUMMER INTENSIVE PLANNED FOR 06/24/20 TO 08/2/20 WAS CANCELLED.(II) HAGEN CORE TRAINING PROGRAM: A ONE-YEAR (THREE-TERM) INTENSIVE FULL-TIME CURRICULUM FOR ACTORS UTILIZING UTA HAGEN'S APPROACH TO ACTING TECHNIQUE AND REHEARSAL PROCESS. 9/16/19 TO 6/5/20, 16 STUDENTS SERVED, AND 4 SCHOLARSHIPS GRANTED. THE THIRD AND FINAL TERM OF THE PROGRAM WAS CONDUCTED ONLINE.(III) HAGEN TEACHERS LAB ONLINE: A FOUR-DAY INTENSIVE FULL-TIME PROGRAM FOR ACTORS AND EDUCATORS INTERESTED IN TEACHING UTA HAGEN'S ACTING EXERCISES AND METHODOLOGY. ONLINE FROM 8/03/20 TO 8/09/20, 15 STUDENTS SERVED AND 2 SCHOLARSHIPS GRANTED.(B) STUDIO CLASSES FOR TRAINING AND PRACTICE: FALL, WINTER, SPRING, AND SUMMER TERMS: ACTING, ACTING IMPROVISATION, ACTING ON CAMERA, SCENE STUDY, ACTING TECHNIQUE, MOVEMENT & THE BODY, MUSICAL THEATRE & SINGING, SPEAKING VOICE, SPEECH, DIRECTING, PLAYWRITING, AND MORE. 3,308 ENROLLMENTS, IN 249 CLASSES/YEAR, SEPTEMBER THROUGH AUGUST, 1,352 STUDENTS SERVED, 104 SCHOLARSHIPS GRANTED, 243 WORK-STUDY GRANTS. SPRING AND SUMMER TERMS WERE CONDUCTED ONLINE.(C) HB STUDIO SPECIAL WORKSHOPS: IN ADDITION TO OUR REGULAR TERM-LENGTH STUDIO CLASS SCHEDULE, THE STUDIO OFFERED SHORT TERM (1-5 SESSIONS) SKILL BUILDING AND SPECIAL FOCUS WORKSHOPS WITH GUEST ARTISTS AND REGULAR FACULTY. 898 ENROLLMENTS IN 66 WORKSHOPS, 590 STUDENTS SERVED, 6 SCHOLARSHIPS GRANTED, 39 WORK-STUDY GRANTS. HB OFFERED A SERIES OF 20 FINANCIAL EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOPS AT $5/SESSION, TAILORED TO NEEDS OF PERFORMING ARTISTS. WORKSHOPS WERE CONDUCTED ONLINE FROM MARCH 30 THROUGH THE YEAR'S END.(D) FIRST FLOOR STUDIO RESIDENCY PROJECTS: HB STUDIO'S FIRST FLOORSTUDIO RESIDENCY PROGRAM IS A 4-WEEK RESIDENCY THAT ALLOWS ARTISTS TO REHEARSE AND PRESENT A NEW WORK AT AN EARLY- TO MID-STAGE OFDEVELOPMENT WITH THE PRODUCTION CAPABILITY OF HB'S FIRST FLOOR STUDIO THEATER SPACE. SIX PROJECTS WERE SELECTED FOR THE 2020 SEASON, 6 WEEKEND WORK-IN-PROGRESS PERFORMANCES WERE PRESENTED TO THE PUBLIC. THIS PROGRAM SERVED 29 ARTISTS AND AN AUDIENCE OF 173. DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, 5 RESIDENCIES WERE DEFERRED UNTIL 2021. HB HOSTED ACTING OUT, A COMPANY OF 14 FORMERLY INCARCERATED MEN, IN A VIRTUAL RESIDENCY LEADING TO A SERIES OF PUBLIC PERFORMANCES.(E) COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP: WINSTON TRANSITIONSHB PARTNERED WITH NONPROFIT PRIVATE NYC-BASED WINSTON PREPARATORY SCHOOL, AN INNOVATIVE DAY SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING DIFFERENCES. HB TEACHING ARTISTS WORKED WITH STUDENTS IN WINSTON'S 'TRANSITIONS' PROGRAM THOSE WHO HAVE GRADUATED FROM 12TH GRADE, BUT NEED ADDITIONAL SUPPORT TO TRANSITION TO THE WORKFORCE OR COLLEGE. THE PROGRAM SERVED 44 YOUNG ADULTS, DIVIDED IN 6 GROUPS, WITH TEN 60-MINUTE SESSIONS PER STUDENT, 60 SESSIONS TOTAL, USING ACTORS' TOOLS TO SUPPORT SELF-EXPRESSION, INDEPENDENT LEARNING, COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL SKILLS. DUE TO COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, FROM MARCH THROUGH JUNE THE PROGRAM WORKSHOPS WERE CONDUCTED ONLINE.(F) PUBLIC PROGRAMS: THEATRE PROGRAM(I) HB STUDIO WORKS-IN-PROGRESS PRODUCTIONS: SEVEN (7) WORK IN PROGRESS PRODUCTIONS OFFERED FREE OF CHARGE, FEATURING 138 ARTISTS AND SERVING AN AUDIENCE OF 932.
