Hopeland pioneers innovative solutions and builds new partnerships to prevent family separation, reunify children who are separated from their families, and mobilize a movement of families to support children who are growing up outside of family care. Hopeland plans to test whether direct cash transfers to female-head households can reduce the risk of prevent parent/child separation and bring children placed in orphanages or living on the streets back home.
Preventing Family Separation in Rural Kenya - Together Hopeland and GiveDirectly provided families with money to help prevent parent-child separation and reduce the number of children entering orphanages. The program targeted female headed house-holds who had at least two members of the household under 18. In total, Hopeland funds reached 606 unique households, who received a total of 1,096 transfers totalling $169,031. $321 of non-Hopeland money was used to achieve this figure.
TechLink - Through a unique public/private partnership we are providing an innovative STEM career pathways program for transition-age (i.e. high school) youth in foster care. Called "TechLink," the initiative welcomed its first cohort of youth in foster care in January 2021 to receive computer science education as well as a variety of other services and supports, including coaching and career development. Hopeland's donation of $50,000 to New Yorkers For Children covers the salary and employment expenses for one year of the TechLink Program Coordinator plus computer equipment and travel expenses for the program enrollees.
Family Separation Prevention Development Impact Bond - Hopeland expenses for the Preventing Family Separation DIB cover staff time to develop and refine the program's operational design document with our partners, and for work sourcing funding for the programmatic deliverables. These deliverables will include a direct cash payment to targeted households and family strengthening training that aims to reduce the incidence of parent/child separation.
