IEARN (INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION AND RESOURCE NETWORK) IS THE U.S. ORGANIZATION OF THE WORLDWIDE IEARN INTERNATIONAL NETWORK. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF IEARN IS TO ASSIST YOUTH (WITH A FOCUS ON ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY EDUCATION AS WELL AS YOUTH SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS) TO USE TELECOMMUNICATIONS TO WORK ON PROJECTS DESIGNED TO MAKE A MEANINGFUL CONTRIBUTION TO THE HEALTH AND WELFARE OF PEOPLE AND THE PLANET.

IEARN GLOBAL PROJECTSIN 2018, IEARN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS AROUND THE WORLD CONNECTED ONLINE, COLLABORATED ON GLOBAL PROJECTS, AND BUILT FRIENDSHIPS AS THEY ADDRESSED SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES IN THEIR COMMUNITY. TEACHERS AND STUDENTS DESIGNED AND FACILITATED MORE THAN 100 PROJECTS ALIGNED WITH THE UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS, COLLABORATIVELY CONNECTING: 74,000+ STUDENTS 2,961 TEACHERS, 124 COUNTRIES.IEARN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENTIEARN-USA PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERVICES PLAY A KEY ROLE IN SUPPORTING EDUCATORS TO BECOME GLOBAL EDUCATION LEADERS. THEY CREATE A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY, PROVIDE SUPPORT, AND GUIDE EDUCATORS IN INTEGRATING GLOBAL PROJECTS INTO THEIR CURRICULUM. IN 2018, IEARN-USA'S PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDED ONLINE COURSES, IN-PERSON WORKSHOPS, VIRTUAL WORKSHOPS, WEBINARS, AND DIGITAL RESOURCES SHARING TO PROVIDE TEACHERS WITH HANDS-ON TOOLS AND SKILLS TO EMPOWER THEM TO BUILD LONG-LASTING GLOBAL CONNECTIONS.FROM SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER 2018, IEARN-USA CONDUCTED THE IEARN ONLINE EDUCATOR COURSE, INTRODUCTION TO ONLINE COLLABORATION AND GLOBAL PROJECTS. THE EIGHT-WEEK ONLINE COURSE TAUGHT PARTICIPANTS ABOUT GLOBAL PROJECT-BASED LEARNING WITH IEARN. IT PREPARED THEM TO PARTICIPATE IN A VIRTUAL EXCHANGE PROJECT WITH THEIR CLASS, AND TO COLLABORATE WITH OTHER TEACHERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THROUGH THE COURSE, TEACHERS LEARNED HOW TO INTEGRATE COLLABORATIVE, PROJECT-BASED LEARNING INTO THEIR TEACHING PRACTICE WHILE ADDRESSING LOCAL AND/OR NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS. PARTICIPANTS ALSO DISCUSSED WAYS TO PREPARE STUDENTS FOR ONLINE GLOBAL COMMUNICATION AND PROJECT WORK, AND TO EVALUATE THEIR LEARNING.SEEING A NEED FOR GLOBAL EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN HIS HOME COMMUNITY, IEARN EDUCATOR ALLEN WITTEN FROM ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA WORKED WITH IEARN-USA'S RACHEL MANLEY, AND THE ORANGE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO PILOT A NEW HYBRID WORKSHOP MODEL. IN OCTOBER 2018, 10 INSPIRED EDUCATORS PARTICIPATED IN A ONE-DAY WORKSHOP IN WHICH RACHEL, AN EXPERT FACILITATOR, LED THE COURSE VIRTUALLY, WHILE ALLEN FACILITATED IN PERSON.GLOBAL EDUCATION AMBASSADORSIEARN-USA'S LEADERSHIP PROGRAM FOR U.S. EDUCATORS, NAMED THE GLOBAL EDUCATION AMBASSADORS (GEA), SUPPORTS TEACHERS IN THEIR GROWTH AS GLOBAL EDUCATORS. GEAS PROMOTES INNOVATIVE GLOBAL EDUCATION BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM THROUGH ONLINE LEARNING BETWEEN TEACHERS AND STUDENTS IN THE US AND INTERNATIONALLY. IEARN-USA GLOBAL EDUCATION AMBASSADORS PLAY A KEY ROLE AS VIRTUAL EXCHANGE PROMOTERS AND MENTORS. THEY NETWORK WITH, SUPPORT, AND GUIDE THESE EDUCATORS IN INTEGRATING VIRTUAL EXCHANGE PROJECTS INTO THEIR CURRICULUM. ONLINE COURSES AND WORKSHOPS THROUGH THE BRIDGE PROGRAMIN JUNE 2018, IEARN BRIDGE (BUILDING RESPECT THROUGH INTERNATIONAL DIALOGUE AND GLOBAL EDUCATION) PROGRAM CAME TO A CLOSE. THE BRIDGE PROGRAM WAS MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH A GRANT FROM THE ASPEN INSTITUTE'S STEVENS INITIATIVE, FUNDED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE AND THE BEZOS FAMILY FOUNDATION IN ORDER TO INCREASE EXCHANGES BETWEEN YOUTH IN THE U.S. AND THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA (MENA) AS A LASTING TRIBUTE TO THE LEGACY OF AMBASSADOR CHRIS STEVENS. STUDENTS AND TEACHERS ALIKE APPRECIATED HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN WITH AND FROM EACH OTHER.2018 IEARN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND YOUTH SUMMIT IEARN-USA HOSTED A SUCCESSFUL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND YOUTH SUMMIT THIS YEAR FROM JULY 9 - 13, 2018 IN WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA. THE CONVENING BROUGHT TOGETHER ABOUT 290 EDUCATORS AND 170 YOUTH FROM 50 COUNTRIES TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, CELEBRATE PROJECT SUCCESSES, AND PLAN NEW ACTIVITIES FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR.EDUCATORS CONNECTED THROUGH MORE THAN 90 WORKSHOPS, SESSIONS, AND PRESENTATIONS AS PART OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE AND 45 SESSIONS AS PART OF THE YOUTH SUMMIT. THE PROGRAM INCLUDED SESSIONS ABOUT IEARN PROJECTS SUCH AS STAYING HEALTHY, GIRL RISING, MACHINTO: HIROSHIMA FOR PEACE, AND HIP HOP ON THE SPOT. PRESENTERS ALSO ORGANIZED INTERACTIVE WORKSHOPS ON USING ICT THROUGH TOPICS SUCH AS INTEGRATING VIDEO INTO PROJECT WORK, USING VIDEOCONFERENCING, DOCUMENTARIES, AND PHOTOJOURNALISM. THE KENNEDY-LUGAR YOUTH EXCHANGE AND STUDY (YES) PROGRAMFUNDED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE AND SPONSORED BY THE BUREAU OF EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS, THE YES PROGRAM IS AN ACADEMIC YEAR EXCHANGE PROGRAM FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM COUNTRIES WITH SIGNIFICANT MUSLIM POPULATIONS. THE YES PROGRAM IS MANAGED BY VARIOUS PARTNERS IN THE U.S. AND INTERNATIONALLY. IEARN MANAGES YES PROGRAMMING IN BANGLADESH, CAMEROON, ISRAEL (ARAB COMMUNITIES), LIBERIA, MALI, PAKISTAN, SIERRA LEONE, AND SURINAME, AND ADVISES AND MANAGES VIRTUAL EXCHANGE ACTIVITIES, PROGRAM WEBSITES, SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGNS AND WEBINARS FOR PARTICIPANTS AND ALUMNI. NATIONAL SECURITY LANGUAGE INITIATIVE FOR YOUTH (NSLI-Y)IEARN-USA CONTINUED ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH AMERICAN COUNCILS FOR INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION TO IMPLEMENT THE NSLI-Y PROGRAM. NSLI-Y IS A U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES MERIT-BASED SCHOLARSHIPS FOR ELIGIBLE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND RECENT HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES TO LEARN LESS COMMONLY TAUGHT LANGUAGES IN SUMMER AND ACADEMIC-YEAR OVERSEAS IMMERSION PROGRAMS. IN 2018, IEARN-USA IMPLEMENTED SUMMER AND ACADEMIC YEAR PROGRAMS FOR 142 STUDENTS TO STUDY ABROAD IN INDIA, KOREA, MOROCCO AND TAIWAN. IEARN-USA ALSO MANAGED THE NSLI-Y INTERACTIVE WEBSITE (HTTP://NSLIY-INTERACTIVE.ORG/), WHICH SHOWCASES LANGUAGE LEARNING AND CROSS-CULTURAL EXPERIENCES OF NSLI-Y STUDENTS AND ALUMNI. IN 2018, IEARN ORGANIZED SIX VIRTUAL-INTERACTIVE EVENTS THAT CONNECTED NSLI-Y STUDENTS ABROAD WITH YOUTH, EDUCATORS AND LANGUAGE LEARNERS IN THE U.S. FOR FURTHER CULTURAL EXCHANGE AND LANGUAGE LEARNING. THIS YEAR, THE EVENTS FOCUSED ON TOPICS RANGING FROM CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AND SELF-GROWTH IN MOLDOVA, TO LANGUAGE LEARNING STRATEGIES, TO CITIZEN AMBASSADORSHIP.SUMMER SISTERSIN THE SUMMER OF 2018, 22 GIFTED AND DYNAMIC PAKISTANI HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS FROM LOW TO MIDDLE INCOME BACKGROUNDS RECEIVED SCHOLARSHIPS TO ATTEND PRE-COLLEGE SUMMER PROGRAMS AT PRESTIGIOUS AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES, INCLUDING HARVARD, THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO, BROWN UNIVERSITY AND BABSON COLLEGE. THE EXCHANGE PROGRAM HAS BEEN IN OPERATION SINCE 2013, AND IS PART OF THE "LET GIRLS LEARN" INITIATIVE, WHICH IS FUNDED BY THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE AND IS ADMINISTERED BY A CONSORTIUM OF PARTNERS, INCLUDING AMERICAN UNIVERSITY, IEARN-PAKISTAN, AND IEARN-USA. DESIGN SQUAD GLOBAL INVENTING GREEN KENYA & RWANDA CLUBSIN OCTOBER 2018, IEARN KENYA LAUNCHED THE DSG INVENTING GREEN CLUBS AT 10 SCHOOLS IN KENYA AND 10 SCHOOLS IN RWANDA. DESIGN SQUAD GLOBAL EMPOWERS MIDDLE SCHOOL KIDS TO SOLVE REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS AND UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF ENGINEERING IN A GLOBAL CONTEXT. REFRESHED WEEKLY WITH CHALLENGES, VIDEOS, AND ACTIVITIES, THE WEBSITE IS ONE OF THE ONLY PLACES ON THE WEB WHERE KIDS CAN SHARE THEIR ENGINEERING IDEAS WITH OTHER KIDS.
