THE INSTITUTE FOR ECONOMICS AND PEACE (IEP) IS AN INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE DEDICATED TO BUILDING A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF THE INTER-RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN BUSINESS, PEACE AND ECONOMICS, WITH A PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF PEACE.
IEP USA has had a successful year, continuing to expand the profile of the organization and our programming, including:Mexico ProgramIn May 2020, we released the annual Mexico Peace Index report by holding a major launch and press conference. Unlike previous years it was held virtually, this increased our audience the reach of our report, resulting in our most successful launch to date. The Mexico program delivered a number of consultancies during the year, covering the majority of the offices expenses. Relationships developed in 2019/20 will likely result in further consultancies in the next financial year, some of which are already in the process of being agreed.RotaryThe partnership has gone from strength to strength in 2019/20. In January we trained 25 Positive Peace Activators in Canada and the US that are now actively involved in increasing club and district involvement in Positive Peace education activities. Training for another 25 in Latin America has started and training for a further 100 around the world is planned. The Rotary Positive Peace Academy has been refreshed and translated into Spanish (over 2,500people have taken the course to date) and a whole suite of Positive Peace training materials has been developed. The strategic partnership and IEPs peace research continue to be promoted extensively through Rotary events, including at the Club and District levels around the world. Positive PeaceAs with previous years, a major program output of IEPs research on Positive Peace is an annual Positive Peace Conference, which we hold in the fall at Stanford University. We again partnered with Stanford Center on Latin American Studies. We were pleased by the attendance of nearly 125 civic leaders, practitioners, community members, students and Rotarians; speakers hailed from academia, the private sector, the development field, local and international NGOs and beyond. Partnerships to incorporate Positive peace in their work were signed with United Religions Initiative and Religions for peace, a number of others are being explored. Global Peace IndexThe 14th edition of the Global Peace Index was released in June 2020. The US launch event was held on-line in partnership with UN75. Official country launches, all on-line, were also held, including Canada, and Mexico. A number of other follow-up events and presentations were held, including remote presentations in Peru and Ecuador Global Terrorism IndexThere were a record number of GTI launch events, presentations and discussions this financial year, notably with UNCTED, UNOCT, NYPD, State Department and the Global Center for Cooperative Security. It was also the first year in which a GTI launch Event was held in Canada. Ambassadors/TrainingWe are growing our network of trained IEP Ambassadors, with nearly 600 Ambassadors in the 2019 cohort alone. These join our network of 1500 IEP Ambassador alumni, which together collectively represent nearly 100 countries. We continued our successful recruiting partnerships with organizations such as Rotary and brought on several new and smaller partners including New Gen peace builders and Mediators Beyond Borders. Ambassadors are trained through an ever-increasing series of webinars and are supported to deliver presentations and engagement activities around our research. Due to the tremendous growth and success of this program, in August 2019 we shifted the IEP Ambassador program to our central office in Sydney, Australia; the New York office will continue to support and promote the program through our key institutional partners. OutreachOur offices maintain an active public speaking and event calendar to support the dissemination of this work, with the US and Mexico offices speaking at several events a month on average. The employees in the New York office frequently travel to speaking events around the United States (and to a lesser extent, Canada), and are regularly in Washington, D.C. Our Mexico director travels extensively, including to share our findings with government officials, researchers, civil society leaders and young people around the country. Given the successful remote outreach in South America this year it is likely travel to this region will increase next year Corona virus permitting.
