Organizations Filed Purposes:
THE INTERFAITH CENTER OF NEW YORK (ICNY) SEEKS TO MAKE NEW YORK CITY AND THE WORLD SAFE FOR RELIGIOUS DIFFERENCES BY INCREASING RESPECT AND MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING AMONG PEOPLE OF DIFFERENT FAITH, ETHNIC AND CULTURAL TRADITIONS, AND BY BOLSTERING COOPERATION AMONG RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES AND CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS TO SOLVE COMMON SOCIAL PROBLEMS.
THE INTERFAITH CENTER OF NEW YORK CONDUCTS ITS PROGRAM ACTIVITIES IN THREE PRINCIPLE AREAS, EDUCATIONAL SERVICES. SERVICES TO IMPROVE SOCIAL JUSTICE AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, AND ADVOCACY SERVICES. ALL STAFF MEMBERS DEVOTE THEIR TIME TO PARTICULAR PROGRAMS WITHIN ONE OR MORE OF THESE PRINCIPAL AREAS.
RELIGIOUS WORLDS OF NY. THE RELIGIOUS WORLDS OF NY SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR K-12 TEACHERS IS A PROJECT OF ICNY AND UNION THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY WITH SUPPORT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES. THE GOAL IS TO HELP K-12 TEACHERS TEACH ABOUT EVERYDAY LIFE OF AMERICAN RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY, IN ADDITION TO THE CONVENTIONAL "WORLD RELIGIONS" CURRICULUM. SELECTED SCHOOL TEACHERS FROM THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES PARTICIPATE. THEY LEARN FROM SCHOLARS OF RELIGION, MEET WITH DIVERSE RELIGIOUS LEADERS, VISIT LOCAL HOUSES OF WORSHIP, CONDUCT FIELD RESEARCH AND DEVELOP THEIR OWN RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY CURRICULUM PROJECTS.
INTERFAITH CIVIC LEADERSHIP. WORKED CLOSELY WITH A GROUP OF DIVERSE RELIGIOUS LEADERS. AS FELLOWS, THE FIRST COHORT OF OUR INTERFAITH CIVIC LEADERSHIP ACADEMY (ICLA) WITH THE GRANT FUNDING FROM TRINITY CHURCH WALL STREET, THE ICLA FELLOWS PARTICIPATED IN A SERIES OF 20 EVENING WORKSHOPS, INCLUDING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT, LEGAL LITERACY, AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZING TRAINING, AS WELL AS INTERFAITH DIALOGUE WITH THEIR PEERS, AND SMALL GRANT SUPPORT FOR THEIR OWN COMMUNITY-BASED PROJECTS. THE PROGRAM HELPED THESE GRASSROOTS RELIGIOUS LEADERS ADVOCATE MORE EFFECTIVELY FOR THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES, AND IMPORTANT SOCIAL ISSUES THAT SHAPE THE LIVES OF ALL NEW YORKERS.
