LEAP PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL ARTS PROGRAMS TO PROMOTE ACCESS AND EQUITY FOR NEW YORK CITY STUDENTS UNDERSERVED IN THE ARTS. WE INSPIRE DIVERSE SCHOOL COMMUNITIES TO LOVE LEARNING AND BUILD THEIR CREATIVITY, COLLABORATION, COMMUNICATION, AND CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS.
LEARNING THROUGH AN EXPANDED ARTS PROGRAM, INC. (LEAP) IS A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF PUBLIC EDUCATION THROUGH A HANDS-ON, ARTS-BASED APPROACH TO TEACHING THE ACADEMIC CURRICULUM. LEAP IS A PIONEER IN THIS APPROACH WHICH IS DESIGNED TO ACCESS STUDENTS THROUGH THEIR PREFERRED LEARNING STYLE AND TO AID IN THE CLOSURE OF THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP.
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS: IN 2018-19, LEAP PROVIDED 29 COMPREHENSIVE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, THE DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, AND THE EMPIRE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM. OFFERED 5 DAYS A WEEK FROM SEPTEMBER THROUGH JUNE, THESE PROGRAMS SERVE MORE THAN 3,000 ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ANNUALLY IN THE BRONX, BROOKLYN, AND MANHATTAN. OFFERINGS INCLUDE SUSTAINED PARTICIPATION IN A PARTICULAR DISCIPLINE INCLUDING DANCE, THEATER, VISUAL ARTS, AND STEM. ALL PROGRAMS CONCLUDED WITH CULMINATING EVENTS WITH FAMILIES, THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY, AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC IN ATTENDANCE
ARTS IN EDUCATION RESIDENCIES: IN 2018-19, LEAP PARTNERED WITH 160 SCHOOLS ACROSS THE FIVE BOROUGHS OF NYC TO PROVIDE CREATIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS AND FAMILY ENGAGEMENT EXPERIENCES TO MORE THAN 15,000 STUDENTS. PROGRAMS RANGED IN CONTENT FROM THEATER, MUSIC, AND DANCE TO VISUAL ARTS AND NEW MEDIA. ALL PROGRAMS CONCLUDED WITH CULMINATING EVENTS WITH FAMILIES, THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY, AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC IN ATTENDANCE. LEAP'S FAMILY ENGAGEMENT WORKSHOPS PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR PARENTS TO LEARN AN ART FORM, CONNECT WITH THEIR CHILD'S SCHOOL, AND MAKE FRIENDS IN THE COMMUNITY. LAST SCHOOL YEAR WE HELD 147 PARENT ENGAGEMENT WORKSHOPS.
