MGC's principle mission is to provide a printmaking studio in Manhattan that offers professional facilities at a reasonable cost, and an environment where artists can work and learn together. Continued on schedule O.
TO PROVIDE AND MAINTAIN A STUDIO FOR ARTISTS TO LEARN,CREATE,TEACH AND EXHIBIT PRINTMAKING ARTS.
CLASSES:Classes is one of the foundational programs of Manhattan Graphics. Classes cover basic printmaking techniques, such as intaglio, relief, screenprint, and lithography, as well as specialized, advanced, creative, or innovative approaches. MGC offers classes during in terms throughout the year: fall, spring, and summer. In the fall and spring, Manhattan Graphics offers what we call core classes, which provide extended, advanced instruction in the basic techniques above; we also offer shorter workshops that build on these skills. During these periods of the year, our core membership tends to enroll. In the summer, classes are shorter, more exploratory, and reach a wider audience. We call this session "SummerINKX and receive special support for that program from the Pierre & Tana Matisse Foundation. Over the course of FY20, we ran 29 classes with total enrollment of 314 students (this represents some duplicate enrollments, as some students sign up for multiple classes during a year).
Open Workshop: Open workshop is Manhattan Graphics Centers founding program. It allows artists to use the printmaking studio in a self-directed manner to make artwork. Some artists pay on an hourly basis. Others receive bundled hours along with class enrollment (meaning that the charges built into tuition). A few receive complimentary open workshop hours, such as our volunteer keyholders and scholarship artists. In FY20, an average of 126 artists used Manhattan Graphics Centers open workshop per term (with many duplicate enrollments across terms).
OUTREACH:Outreach consists of several programs that reach audiences beyond our studio walls, including exhibitions, artist talks, scholarships, and the Visiting Printmaker Workshop. Exhibitions: Manhattan Graphics Center presents solo member shows, exchange exhibitions, juried shows, and our annual member show in two gallery spaces. In FY20 we hosted the 4th New York International Miniature Print Exhibition, which drew 426 entries, from which 119 artists were selected, representing 21 countries from around the world, including the USA, Canada, England, Ireland, France, Russia, and New Zealand. In FY20, Manhattan Graphics Center hosted 11 exhibitions in its space, featuring the work of 262 artists, viewed by more than 654 individuals. During Covid-19, MGC hosted two online exhibitions and revived 10 past exhibitions on its website, reaching an additional 3,754 individuals who viewed the works of 626 artists.Artist Talks: Manhattan Graphics Center regularly invites artists to discuss their current practice with the public in gatherings that allow a free exchange of ideas. When taking place in our physical space, we usually have 15-25 attendees. Under Covid-19 we have moved these programs online and have seen an uptick in the total number of attendees. In FY20, MGC hosted 10 Artist Talks (both in person and online), featuring 16 guest speakers, attracting a total of 441 people. Scholarships: Manhattan Graphics Center provided need-based adult scholarships to 10 recipients during the grant period. Each was granted a tuition-free class enrollment, unlimited use of the studio, free storage, a $125 stipend towards supplies and materials, and a year-long membership at MGC. Visiting Printmaker Workshop: The Visiting Printmaker Workshop program is an outreach youth education program. Manhattan Graphics Center's teaching artists provide printmaking instruction onsite at three Manhattan public high schools, together with the students classroom art teacher. The sessions are supplemented by a field trip to the International Print Center NY (IPCNY) and to our workshop space, where the students are given a demonstration of printmaking techniques they use in the classroom. In FY20, Manhattan Graphics Center provided three in-person units and one online unit to three NYC high schools: Vanguard High School, the High School of Art and Design, and The High School of Fashion Industries. By the end of the 2019-20 school year, 114 New York City public school students participated in a Visiting Printmakers Workshop unit.
