Organizations Filed Purposes: To provide a framework for how the arts and sustainability can be linked in innovative ways to create cities that help us redefine how we live our lives, use our resources, how we communicate, educate, work, and collaborate. City as Living Laboratory (CaLL)conceives of the city as a living laboratory where artists and designers collaborate with scientists, other experts and policy makers to create immediate experiential impact from research and planning initiatives. The goal is to make sustainability personal, visceral, tangible, and encourage citizen action.

In FY2020 CALL conducted one live-in person WALK, a community WORKSHOP, and three virtual on-line events for our project to advance daylighting Tibbetts Brook in the NW Bronx. In Milwaukee for our city-wide WaterMarks initiative to enhance water stewardship we conducted an in-person WORKSHOP in July 2019 and an on-line virtual WORKSHOP in March 2020 followed by individual interviews and community surveys to provide input on the next Marker letter and location. In April 2020 we conducted an on-line WORKSHOP to advance our project focused on the interdependences of cultural resilience and the unique, specialized food systems of Chinatown. In May 2020 we commissioned two virtual WALKS for the annual Janes Walk program one by Tattfoo Tan on Staten Island, and the second by Maya Ciarrocchi & Francheska Alcantara focused on Tibbetts Brook and their personal water histories. CALL also commissioned a virtual Story Map by Matt Jensen with additional insights provided by ecologist Eric Sanderson along with NYC Department of Environmental Conservation Deputy Commissioner Pinar Balci and Project Manager Tolga Yilmaz (mid-May 2020). This was followed by a live, on line discussion with the creators facilitated by Robert Fanuzzi, Chairman of the Bronx Council on Environmental Quality. CALL/CONVERSATIONS brought together leading artists, designers and scientists. In July 2019 architect and Director of the NYC Design Commissions, Justin Garrett Moore, and urban ecologist, William Solecki, discussed community engagement in designing urban spaces that can survive sea level rise. This was followed by a panel conversation in December 2019 with composer and activist, George Lewis, and sociologist, Richard Sennett, on improvisation, co-creation, and building a foundation for sustainable futures.
