MINT THEATER COMPANY FINDS AND PRODUCES WORTHWHILE PLAYS FROM THE PAST (CONTINUED IN SCHEDULE O)THAT HAVE BEEN LOST OR FORGOTTEN. IT IS OUR MISSION TO CREATE NEW LIFE FOR THESE PLAYS THROUGH RESEARCH, DRAMATURGY, PRODUCTION, PUBLICATION, READINGS AND A VARIETY OF ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS.
FY20 WAS A YEAR OF EXCEPTIONALLY LIMITED ACTIVITY FOR MINT THEATER COMPANY. A YEAR OF AMBITIOUS PLANS CAME TO AN END ON MARCH 12, 2020, WHEN WE CLOSED CHEKHOV/TOLSTOY: LOVE STORIES JUST THREE DAYS SHORT OF COMPLETING OUR RUN. THE TIMING OF NEW YORK'S COVID-19 SHUTDOWN WREAKED HAVOC ON SO MANY THEATER COMPANIES; WE CONSIDER OURSELVES FORTUNATE-OUR LOSSES WERE MINIMAL. THIS WAS OUR ONLY FULL PRODUCTION FOR THE YEAR, ALTHOUGH WE DID PLAY THE FINAL TWO WEEKS OF THE MOUNTAINS LOOK DIFFERENT BY MICHEL MAC LIAMMIR IN JULY 2019; OUR PRODUCTION BEGAN PERFORMANCES ON MAY 30, 2019. OUR PLANS FOR THE REST OF FY20 AND THE START OF FY21 CENTERED ON TWO PLAYS BY ELIZABETH BAKER TO BE PRODUCED IN OVERLAPPING PRODUCTIONS IN TWO THEATERS. WE WERE ABLE TO POSTPONE THOSE PRODUCTIONS BEFORE INCURRING SUBSTANTIAL EXPENSES. (SEE SCH O) (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2)CHEKHOV/TOLSTOY: LOVE STORIES FROM JANUARY 23, 2020 THROUGH MARCH 12, MINT PRESENTED A PROGRAM OF SHORT PLAYS ADAPTED FROM STORIES BY TWO OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST AUTHORS, ANTON CHEKHOV AND LEO TOLSTOY. THESE DRAMATIC ADAPTATIONS CAME FROM ONE OF OUR FAVORITE PLAYWRIGHTS, MILES MALLESON, AUTHOR OF MINT PRODUCTIONS, CONFLICT AND YOURS UNFAITHFULLY, BOTH NEW YORK TIMES CRITIC'S PICKS. OUR PRODUCTION FEATURED SEVEN ACTORS, INCLUDING VINIE BURROWS, WHO RECENTLY RECEIVED A LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT OBIE AWARD. OUR PRODUCTION PLAYED TO PACKED HOUSES FOR 50 PERFORMANCES AT THEATRE ROW, 410 WEST 42ND ST. SERVING A TOTAL AUDIENCE OF 4534 PEOPLE. ROGER HANNA DESIGNED THE SETS, COSTUMES WERE BY OANA BOTEZ, MATTHEW RICHARDS DESIGNED THE LIGHTS AND CO-DIRECTOR JANE SHAW, ALSO DESIGNED THE SOUND. THE NEW YORKER OFFERED THE FOLLOWING PRAISE: "THE ARTIST, DIRECTED BY JONATHAN BANK, AND MICHAEL, DIRECTED BY JANE SHAW, WERE ADAPTED, BY MILES MALLESON, FROM SHORT STORIES BY ANTON CHEKHOV AND LEO TOLSTOY, RESPECTIVELY-TWO GUYS WHO WEREN'T AFRAID OF TACKLING THE BIG ISSUES AND WHO GRAPPLE HERE WITH QUESTIONS OF MORALITY, SOCIAL JUSTICE, THE ROLE OF THE ARTIST, AND MIRACLES OF CHRISTIANITY. MALLESON, AN ENGLISH ACTOR, PLAYWRIGHT, AND PACIFIST, DEVISED THESE ELEGANT RECONFIGURATIONS AS THE GREAT WAR WAS COMING TO A CLOSE; BANK'S MINT THEATER PAIRS THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME, IN PRODUCTIONS THAT ARE THOROUGHLY HANDSOME AND THOUGHT-PROVOKING."
