NARRATIVE 4 FOSTERS EMPATHY BY BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS AND STEREOTYPES THROUGH THE EXCHANGE OF STORIES ACROSS THE WORLD. LED BY GLOBALLY INFLUENTIAL ARTISTS, EDUCATORS, STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY ADVOCATES, N4 IS DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF EMPATHETIC LEADERS AND CITIZENS.
FOSTERS EMPATHY BY BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS THROUGH THE EXCHANGE OF STORIES ACROSS THE WORLD.
GENERAL PROGRAMMING. IN THE CLASSROOM AND COMMUNITY, THE PROGRAMS REACHED OVER 26,000 ESTIMATED PARTICIPANTS AROUND THE WORLD COMPARED IN ANY PREVIOUS YEAR. AS SUCH, AN ESTIMATED OF 500 FACILITATORS WERE ADDED TO THEIR NETWORK. 81% OF STORY EXCHANGE PARTICIPANTS EXPRESS AN INCREASE IN EMPATHY POST-STORY EXCHANGE, AS MEASURED BY THE POST-EXCHANGE SURVEY IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO. 77% OF PARTICIPANTS EXPRESS MOTIVATION TOWARD POSITIVE ACTION-TAKING POST-STORY EXCHANGE. 91% OF PARTICIPANTS FEEL THEIR PERSPECTIVES HAVE EXPANDED AFTER THE STORY EXCHANGE. ADDITIONALLY, THE ORGANIZATION LAUNCHED THE REGIONAL HUB GROWTH MODEL IN THE UNITED STATES. THE ORGANIZATION FOCUSED THE MAJORITY OF THEIR RESOURCES ON DEPLOYING THE TRAIN-THE-TRAINER MODEL IN THE NORTHEAST AND SOUTHEAST HUBS. THEY TRAINED THE SECOND COHORT OF MASTER PRACTITIONERS. THEY FORMED PARTNERSHIPS WITH SCHOOLS IN THE REGION, ENGAGED MORE EDUCATORS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND, THEREFORE, DELIVERED THE PROGRAMS TO MORE YOUNG ADULTS. THE ORGANIZATION IS WORKING TO REFINE AND REPLICATE THE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP MODELS ACROSS THE US AND AROUND THE WORLD.
SUMMIT. THE ORGANIZATION HOSTED THE EIGHTH ANNUAL GLOBAL SUMMIT IN NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, USA. THEY BROUGHT TOGETHER ARTISTS, STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD WHO ARE INTEGRATING NARRATIVE 4 INTO THEIR COMMUNITIES. OVER FIVE DAYS, THESE GLOBAL AMBASSADORS EXAMINED A HOST OF COMPLEX ISSUES CURRENTLY DIVIDING THE UNITED STATES AND THE WORLD IN ORDER TO LEARN TOOLS THAT WILL ALLOW THEM TO BETTER ADDRESS THESE ISSUES IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES. THE SUMMIT ALSO PROVIDED SPACE FOR OUR LEADERS TO TEST NEW METHODS, LEARN FROM EXPERTS WHO RESEARCH EMPATHY-BUILDING PROGRAMS, AND STRATEGIZE WAYS TO EXPAND THEIR WORK TO MORE CLASSROOMS AND COMMUNITIES. THEIR STAFF WORKS YEAR-ROUND TO DESIGN A SUMMIT THAT IS INFORMED BY THE PREVIOUS YEAR'S PROGRAMS AND SETS THE TONE FOR THE YEAR AHEAD.
FIELD EXCHANGE PROJECT. WE CONTINUED OUR FIELD EXCHANGE PROJECT, A PROGRAM THAT PAIRS TWO SCHOOLS FOR AN ENTIRE ACADEMIC YEAR. THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO ADDRESS PERCEIVED DIVIDES BETWEEN STUDENTS LIVING IN DIFFERENT PLACES AND CULTURES, AND TO TURN EMPATHY INTO ACTION THROUGH A COLLECTIVE COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH FLOYD CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL IN EASTERN, KY AND UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL IN THE BRONX, NY, WE FACILITATED A YEAR-LONG CURRICULUM THAT INCLUDES TWO, WEEK-LONG IMMERSION TRIPS IN EACH COMMUNITY. THE TWO SCHOOLS ARE ALSO CONNECTED TO A THIRD PARTNER, THE AMERICAN SCHOOL OF TAMPICO, IN TAMPICO, MEXICO. THE THREE SCHOOLS CONNECT VIRTUALLY THROUGH PORTALS, STRUCTURES DESIGNED BY TECH COMPANY SHARED STUDIOS. THE PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM THE PROJECT ARE EXTREMELY POSITIVE. STUDENTS REPORTED A 50% INCREASE IN FEELINGS OF CLOSENESS TO THEIR PEERS FROM THE OTHER SCHOOL AFTER HAVING REPORTED FEELINGS OF SUSPICION AND ANXIETY BEFORE THE PROGRAM. MUCH OF OUR PROGRAMS ARE INFORMED BY THE EXPERIMENTAL WORK IN THE FIELD EXCHANGE. THE IMMERSION WEEKS ALSO SERVE AS OUTREACH EVENTS THAT HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF NARRATIVE 4 IN THE SCHOOLS' COMMUNITIES.
