Organizations Filed Purposes:
To find a permanent space on the Upper West Side to create and operate a not-for-profit neighborhood cinema devoted to quality independent and foreign films.
New Plaza Cinema partnered with local cultural centers to screen a series of independent, foreign and documentary films in New York City, many of which would not have otherwise been readily available to the public, and all of which provided the public with an opportunity to learn about challenging, socially-relevant subject matter. More than 30,000 people attended these screenings from June through December. New Plaza Cinema hosted two lectures and question and answer sessions that brought diverse members of the public together to learn about and explore the art of independent film, including foreign and documentary film, and to engage with the challenging, socially-relevant subject matter of such films. Approximately 250 people attended each of these sessions.
