Organizations Filed Purposes: The mission of the New York City AIDS Memorial is to commemorate the ongoing history of the AIDS epidemic through construction and maintenance of a permanent memorial to honor, promote awareness, and increase understanding of that history through visitation and public programming.

The New York City AIDS Memorial is dedicated to the recognition and preservation of the ongoing history of the AIDS crisis. The Organization has raised funds to build and maintain a memorial to honor New York City's over 100,000 men, women, and children who have died from AIDS, to commemorate and celebrate the efforts of the caregivers and activists who responded to fight the disease, and to recognize the ongoing crisis.

#LIGHTTHEFIGHTOn World AIDS Day (December 1) 2018, the New York City AIDS Memorial presented #LightTheFight, an interactive art experience. #LightTheFight, a collaboration with world-renowned visual artist Jenny Holzer, began with an interactive ceremony and performance at dusk (4:30pm EST) at the New York City AIDS Memorial Park in the heart of the West Village, corner of W 12th St & Greenwich Avenue. Lewis Miller of Lewis Miller Design and the creator of The Flower Flash also installed a Flower Flash at the fountain the morning of the event.Following the ceremony, a fleet of five trucks emblazoned with LED signs began a journey through the city displaying a series of quotes that convey the impact, history, and ongoing battle against the AIDS epidemic worldwide. Selected and presented by Holzer, the writings by poets, activists, artists, educators, and people living with HIV and AIDS span a range of emotions from sorrow and fury to endurance and transcendence. The texts were animated in black and white, with the occasional burst of color to amplify the messages and add emphasis. The procession of mobile LED billboards drove through the city lingering at various historicallysignificant sites and areas including The LGBT Community Center, Harlem, Times Square, the Hudson River Piers near Christopher Street, and the Meatpacking Districtnow home to the Whitney Museum of American Art. The public was encouraged to observe the installation at one of its many stops and share their experience on social media using the #LightTheFight hashtag.#LightTheFight marked the inaugural launch of the NYC AIDS Memorial Arts and Education Initiative. The initiative supports interactive, experiential, digital, and site-specific educational and arts programming and will further the Memorials aim to honor the more than 100,000 people who have died from AIDS in New York City and the tens of millions more who have died throughout the world.

VISUAL IMPACT: ON ART, AIDS, AND ACTIVISMOn June 1, 2019, to commemorate World Pride and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the NYC AIDS Memorial debuted its newest site-specific art installation, Visual Impact: On Art, AIDS, and Activism. Situated adjacent to the Memorial Park on Greenwich Avenue, and presented in partnership with the NYC Department of Transportations Art Program, the educational exhibition showcased eight iconic worksby artists, graphic designers, and photographers including Keith Haring, Catherine Opie, General Idea, and Brendan Fernandesthat represent the visual identity of the AIDS resistance from the mid-1980s through today.Visual Impact continues the long-standing tradition of installing art in public spaces to inform and create awareness. The emotionally arresting art and thought provoking text will inspire a renewed call to action. This important exhibition, steps away from the NYC AIDS Memorial, offers visitors the opportunity to understand and reflect on the full impact of the AIDS crisis.
