NEW YORK LIVE ARTS STRIVES TO CREATE A ROBUST FRAMEWORK IN SUPPORT OF THE NATION'S DANCE AND MOVEMENT-BASED ARTISTS THROUGH NEW APPROACHES OF PRODUCING, PRESENTING AND EDUCATING IN OUR 20,000 SQUARE FOOT HOME, WHICH INCLUDES A 184-SEAT THEATER, TWO 1,200 SQUARE FOOT STUDIOS, AND COMMUNAL SPACE IN THE LOBBY AND CAFE. LIVE ARTS SERVES AS HOME BASE FOR THE BILL T. JONES/ARNIE ZANE DANCE COMPANY, PROVIDES AN EXTENSIVE RANGE OF PARTICIPATORY PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS AND YOUNG PEOPLE AND SUPPORTS THE CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF ARTISTS. WITH OUR AUDIENCE, WE SEEK TO BECOME A PLACE FOR DANCE THAT IS VITAL TO THE FABRIC OF SOCIAL AND CULTURAL LIFE IN NEW YORK, AMERICA AND BEYOND.
NEW YORK LIVE ARTS IS AN INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNIZED DESTINATION FOR INNOVATIVE, MOVEMENT-BASED ARTISTRY LOCATED IN THE HEART OF CHELSEA IN NEW YORK CITY. THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, BILL T. JONES, A WORLD-RENOWNED CHOREOGRAPHER, DANCER, THEATER DIRECTOR AND WRITER LEADS OUR MISSION TO OFFER AUDIENCES ACCESS TO ART AND ARTISTS NOTABLE FOR THEIR CONCEPTUAL RIGOR, FORMAL EXPERIMENTATION AND ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT WITH THE SOCIAL, POLITICAL AND CULTURAL CURRENTS OF OUR TIMES.
NEW YORK LIVE ARTS HAD A CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED 2019-20 SEASON INCLUDING TWO BESSIE AWARD NOMINATIONS AMONG THIRTEEN COMMISSIONED ARTISTS. LIVE ARTS PRODUCED 10 MAIN STAGE PRESENTATIONS INCLUDING LIVE FEED AND LIVE IDEAS THAT BROUGHT IN AN AUDIENCE OF NEARLY 13,389 TO LIVE ARTS. THE BILL T. JONES/ARNIE ZANE COMPANY TOURED NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY (DIGITIALLY), BRINGING ITS WORK TO APPROXIMATELY 4,000 AUDIENCE MEMBERS. DURING THE COMPANY'S 38TH YEAR, THEY HAD 6 PERFORMANCES IN 4 STATES THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES INCLUDING INDIANA, NEBRASKA, NEW YORK AND VIRGINIA. DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE COMPANY EXPERIENCED THE LOSS OF 24 PERFORMANCES INCLUDING A WORLD PREMIERE OF A MASSIVE NEW WORK MADE FOR THE PARK AVENUE ARMORY THAT WAS TO BE PERFORMED IN NEW YORK AND PENNSYLVANIA. THE COMPANY ALSO PLANNED TO SPEND ONE MONTH IN AMSTERDAM AS PART OF THE HOLLAND FESTIVAL WHERE THEY WERE SET TO PREMIERE TWO EUROPEAN PREMIERES AS WELL AS SEVERAL OTHER ANCILLARY EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE MONTH. WHILE SOME PERFORMANCES WERE POSTPONED, THE HOLLAND FESTIVAL BECAME A DIGITAL FESTIVAL AND WE PRODUCED SEVERAL DIGITAL EVENTS.NEW YORK LIVE ARTS PRESENTED ITS FIFTH RESIDENT COMMISSIONED ARTIST PROGRAM, RAJA FEATHER KELLY, CONTINUED THEIR RESIDENCY AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THEIR NEW WORK. DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THEIR PREIMIER IN 2020 WAS POSTPONED AND WILL BE PREMIERD IN 2021. LIVE ARTS COMMISSIONED NEW WORK FROM SOME OF THE MOST FORWARD-THINKING INDEPENDENT ARTISTS OF OUR TIME INCLUDING SARAH JONES, ANNE TERESA DEKEERSMAEKER, YANIRA CASTRO, RASHAAD NEWSOME, ELLEN ROBBINS, ZISHAN URGULU, ALEXANDRA CHASIN AND KIMBERLY BARTOSIK. ALONG WITH PERFORMANCE FEES, EACH COMMISSIONED ARTIST ENJOYED A WEEK-LONG TECHNICAL RESIDENCY IN NEW YORK LIVE ARTS' THEATER, AN UNUSUAL OPPORTUNITY TO REFINE A WORK FOR THE STAGE. ADDITIONALLY, WE SUPPORTED ARTISTS ALICE SHEPPARD, RAPHAEL XAVIER WITH TECHNICAL RESIDENCIES IN OUR THEATRE. DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, WE HAD TO POSTPONE AND/OR CANCEL LIVE FEED ARTISTS ABBY ZBIKOWSKI AND COLLEEN THOMAS AS WELL AS OUR FRESH TRACKS PRESENTATION AND ANNUAL LIVE IDEAS FESTIVAL.WE WERE ABLE TO PIVOT AND PRODUCE VIRTUAL PRESENTATIONS BY LIVE FEED ARTIST JAAMIL KOSOKO CO-PRESENTED WITH EMPAC, DANIEL ALEXANDER JONES AND HOLLY BASS AS WELL AS OUR ANNUAL PRIDE EVENT, CO-PRESENTED WITH BROOKLYN ACADEMY OF MUSIC.THE LIVE FEED RESIDENCY PROGRAM IS A LABORATORY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW COMMISSIONED WORK DIRECTED TO OUR THEATER. EMERGING AND MID-CAREER ARTISTS SELECTED BY THE LIVE ARTS CURATORIAL STAFF ARE OFFERED 140 HOURS OF REHEARSAL TIME OVER TWO YEARS, CULMINATING IN AN INFORMAL PUBLIC OF A WORK-IN-PROGRESS, FOLLOWED BY MODERATED DISCUSSIONS IN THE FIRST YEAR. IN THE SECOND YEAR, WE PREMIERED THEIR NEWLY CREATED PERFORMANCE PIECE IN OUR THEATER. NEW YORK LIVE ARTS SERVED AS AN ARTISTIC HOME TO MORE THAN 200 EMERGING AND MID-CAREER ARTIST.AS NOTED ABOVE, NEW YORK LIVE ARTS HAD TO POSTPONE ITS ANNUAL LIVE IDEAS FESTIVAL, WHICH IS AN ANNUAL HUMANITIES FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS AND IDEAS, EXPLORING THE IDEAS, CONTROVERSIES AND THINKING INFORMING A DIFFERENT BODILY-ORIENTED THEME EACH TIME OUT. LIVE IDEAS IS ALSO INTENDED TO BRING IN NEW AUDIENCES; THOSE WHO MIGHT NOT NORMALLY ATTEND DANCE BUT WOULD ACCESS PROGRAMMING ROOTED IN OTHER SPHERES OF INQUIRY. NEW YORK LIVE ARTS' LIVE CORE PROGRAM IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDE ARTISTS WITH THE TOOLS, SUPPORT AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THEY NEED TO TRULY EXCEL. THE PROGRAM DRAWS ON THE RESOURCES OF THE INSTITTUION TO MAKE IT POSSIBLE FOR ARTISTS TO CONNECT WITH LARGER AUDIENCES, RAISE FUNDS TO SUPPORT THEIR WORK, AND AUGMENT THE VISIBILITY OF DANCE IN NEW YORK. ENROLLMENT WITH AN AFFORDABLE $100 FOR A FULL YEAR OF UNLIMITED ACCESS TO MARKETING SERVICES, INCLUSION IN LIVE ARTS' E-BLASTS AND PRINT PROGRAMS, DEVELOPMENT AND FUNDRAISING GUIDENCE, TICKET DISCOUNTS AND ACCESS TO MASTERCLASSES AND WORKSHOPS. NEW YORK LIVE ARTS CONTINUED SHARED PRACTICE, A MASTER-CLASS PROGRAM WHERE LIVE ARTS SEASON ARTISTS RECEIVE A STUDIO-BASED EXPERIENCE THAT CREATES AN EXCHANGE BETWEEN ARTISTS WHO WOULD LIKE TO EXPERIENCE A PROCESS OTHER THAN THEIR OWN. NEW YORK LIVE ARTS HAD AN ONGOING PARTNERSHIP WITH THE JAMES BALDWIN SCHOOL FOR EXPEDITIONARY LEARNING, FOCUSED ON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED SCHOOL AS UNRESPONSIVE TO THEIR NEEDS AS INDIVIDUALS. DESIGNED TO BROADEN THE ARTISTIC EXPERIENCE AND PROVIDE TWO FULL SEMESTERS OF COURSE WORK, A CLASS OF 6-8 STUDENTS WORK WITH TEACHING ARTIST RECRUITED FROM OUR SEASON PROGRAMMING TO DEVELOP PERSONAL ORAL HISTORY INTO PERFORMANCE. WE ALSO HAVE A CURRICULUM ESTABLISHED WITH NEW YORK DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTION ON AN ANNUAL IN-GOING BASIS TO PROVIDE ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMS FOR YOUTHFUL DETAINEES AT RIKER'S ISLAND. THESE WEEK-LONG EDUCATION WORKSHOPS WITH YOUNG DETAINEES AGES 18-20 INCLUDE VIEWING RECORDINGS OF PERFORMANCES, STUDYING MOVEMENT AND TEXT WITH TEACHING ARTISTS, AND RESPONDING THROUGH THEIR OWN CHOREOGRAPHY AND SPOKEN WORD. WORKSHOPS ARE HELD BY MEMBERS OF OUR RESIDENT COMPANY; BILL T. JONES /ARNIE ZANE DANCE COMPANY AT THE GEORGE MOTCHAN DETENTION CENTER ON RIKER'S ISLAND. DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, LIMITATIONS ON IN-PERSON TEACHING IMPOSED BY NYDOC THAT MADE US UNABLE TO HOST CLASSES IN SPRING/SUMMER 2020 AS PLANNED. ALONG WITH ITS ROBUST TOURING SCHEDULE, BILL T JONES/ARNIE ZANE COMPANY HAD NUMEROUS MASTERLASSES, AND WORKSHOPS AT ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS CHICAGO ARTS HIGH SCHOOL, UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS, AND LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY.
