DEVELOP AND PRODUCE NEW WORKS FOR THEATRE AND FILM

The Powerhouse Season: NYSAFs unique residency and partnership with Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Each summer, hundreds of professional playwrights, directors, actors and designers, as well as dozens of students in our Training Company, live and work together in a collaborative artistic environment. In 2019, NYSAF continued this core program, bringing together approximately 325 artists, 50 training company members, 27 interns, 50 staff and faculty, and 7,500 audience members in an intensive, vibrant community in the Hudson River Valley dedicated to the development of new work for theater and film. 23 projects were presented publicly over 6 weeks, including: 2 mainstage productions, 3 musical workshops, 2 play workshops, 7 public readings, and 5 Training Company productions, as well as additional residency and development activity.

New York City Programming: Additional artistic work outside of the Powerhouse Program includes the New York City Reading series, presenting works in progress on the Barnard College Campus; The Winter Season, with 7-10 workshops, readings, and residencies of new plays and musicals in progress, presented publicly over 2-4 weeks in NYC; additional developmental work; awards, fellowships and residencies to writers and directors; and the continued engagement of our extended community of artists and alumni. Filmmakers Workshop: A tailored, process-oriented program that provides mentorship and project development to early-career writers for film and other filmed media. Activities include a one-week residency at Vassar during the Powerhouse Season where participants engage in one-on-one feedback sessions with professional mentors, panel discussions, screenings, developmental screenplay readings, and production discussions all designed to bring each screenplay and project closer to completion; ongoing mentorship and project feedback sessions; and a NYC event presenting the participants to the industry. The 2019 Filmmakers Workshop served 11 screenwriters and included 15 leading mentors and advisors, public programming, and an acting company.
