THE NEW YORK STATE SOCIETY OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS (NYSSCPA) IS ONE OF THE LARGEST STATE ACCOUNTING ORGANIZATIONS IN THE NATION WITH APPROXIMATELY 24,000 MEMBERS. IT WAS INCORPORATED IN 1897 FOR THE FOLLOWING PURPOSES TO CULTIVATE, PROMOTE, AND DISSEMINATE KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION CONCERNING CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS, TO ESTABLISH AND MAINTAIN HIGH STANDARDS OF INTEGRITY, HONOR, AND CHARACTER AMONG CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS, TO FURNISH INFORMATION REGARDING ACCOUNTANCY AND THE PRACTICE AND METHODS THEREOF TO ITS MEMBERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC TO PROTECT THE INTEREST OF ITS MEMBERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC WITH RESPECT TO THE PRACTICE OF ACCOUNTANCY. THE SOCIETY FULFILLS ITS MISSION THROUGH ITS 15 CHAPTERS, MORE THAN 60 TECHNICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE COMMITTEES, AND A 37-VOTING-MEMBER BOARD OF DIRECTORS. THE ADMINISTRATIVE OPERATIONS ARE UNDER THE DIRECTION OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, ASSISTED BY A PROFESSIONAL STAFF OF APPROXIMATELY 58.
TO CULTIVATE, PROMOTE, AND DISSEMINATE KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION CONCERNING CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS.
MEMBERSHIP SERVICESTHE NYSSCPA CONTINUED THE WORK OF ITS STRATEGIC PLAN CHANNELING ITS ACTIVITIES TO FOUR CORE GOALS INCLUDING: (1) PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE AND INTEGRITY; (2) ADVOCACY; (3) THE NEXT GENERATION; AND (4) PUBLIC AWARENESS.THE SOCIETY PRODUCED 24 COMMENT LETTERS DURING THE 2018-2019 FISCAL YEAR THAT WERE SENT TO REGULATORS SUCH AS THE U.S. TREASURY DEPARTMENT,, NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY (NIST), FEDERAL RESERVE BOARD, SECURITIES AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION (SEC), THE FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING STANDARDS BOARD (FASB), INTERNATIONAL ACCOUNTING STANDARDS BOARD (IASB), INTERNATIONAL AUDITING AND ASSURANCE STANDARDS BOARD (IAASB), NEW YORK CITY DEPARTMENT OF CONSUMER AFFAIRS AND STATE AND FEDERAL LAWMAKERS. ANALYSIS AND COMMENTARY WAS DRIVEN BY THE WORK OF THE SOCIETY'S TECHNICAL COMMITTEES. THESE MORE THAN 60 COMMITTEES MET, COLLECTIVELY, NEARLY 350 TIMES IN THE 2018-2019 FISCAL YEAR AND PRODUCED NEARLY 25 FULL-DAY CONFERENCES AS PART OF THEIR ANNUAL ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING THE 41ST ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THE ANNUAL NOT-FOR-PROFIT CONFERENCE. NYSSCPA COMMITTEES ALSO PROVIDE A FORUM FOR HIGH-LEVEL TECHNICAL DISCUSSION AND PROFESSIONAL RESOURCES, SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE MEMBERSHIP AS WELL AS FOR EXTERNAL AUDIENCES. THE 2018-2019 FISCAL YEAR WAS A STRONG ONE IN TERMS OF ADVOCACY FOR THE NYSSCPA. THE SOCIETY HOSTED ITS SECOND LOBBY DAY IN ALBANY, THE STATE CAPITOL, ON MAY 14, 2018, WITH CPA MEMBERS MEETING WITH STATE SENATORS AND ASSEMBLY MEMBERS OR THEIR STAFFS WHERE THEY ADVOCATED FOR THE PASSAGE OF LEGISLATION THAT WOULD REQUIRE CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION FOR ALL CPAS, ELIMINATING THE EXEMPTION FOR THOSE WHO ARE NEWLY LICENSED. THE NYSSCPA ALSO CONTINUED TO SUPPORT THE PASSAGE OF A BILL THAT WOULD ALLOW NON-CPAS TO OWN MINORITY STAKES IN A CPA FIRM. IN ORDER TO STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS WITH LEGISLATORS WE HELD A SERIES OF LEGISLATIVE BREAKFASTS ACROSS NEW YORK STATE TO BRING TOGETHER LEGISLATORS WITH THEIR CPA CONSTITUENTS. WE HELD A SYMPOSIUM TO ADDRESS THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY AND THE LEGAL AND REGULATORY IMPACT ON CPAS. NYSSCPA ALSO WORKED WITH THE NEW YORK STATE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT REGARDING CHANGES TO THE ETHICS REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROFESSION AND UNPROFESSIONAL CONDUCT RULES. THE SOCIETY ALSO DEVELOPED AND EXECUTED ANTI-HARASSMENT TRAINING FOR STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS.DURING THE 2018-2019 FISCAL YEAR, THE SOCIETY SUCCESSFULLY RECRUITED AND ADMITTED 1,265 NEW MEMBERS. THE CURRENT MEMBERSHIP IS 23,071 (FIGURES BASED ON MAY 31, 2019 MEMBERSHIP REPORT). CAMPAIGNS TO INCREASE MEMBERSHIP THIS YEAR INCLUDED CONTINUED DEVELOPMENT OF THE NEXTGEN PROGRAM, WHICH INCLUDED RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION INITIATIVES AIMED AT FINANCIAL AND ACCOUNTING PROFESSIONALS 40 AND UNDER. ONE OF THE PROGRAMS TO SUPPORT THIS INITIATIVE WAS THE NEWLY FORMED LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE, WHICH IDENTIFIED 16 PROMISING YOUNG LEADERS AND ALLOWED THEM TO ATTEND A FORMAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM, HELPING TO GROOM THEM AS POTENTIAL FUTURE LEADERS.
NYSSCPA CHAPTERSEACH YEAR, THE NYSSCPA OFFICERS AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR VISIT EACH OF THE SOCIETY'S 15 CHAPTERS TO PROVIDE AN UPDATE TO MEMBERS ABOUT THE SOCIETY'S ACTIVITIES AND COLLECT FEEDBACK REGARDING THE SOCIETY'S PRIORITIES, PROGRAMS AND VALUE TO MEMBERS. IN FISCAL YEAR 2018-2019, MULTIPLE CHAPTERS HELD ANNUAL TOWN HALL AND CPA ETHICS UPDATE MEETINGS, WITH MANY CHAPTERS SEPARATELY HOSTING INDIVIDUAL SESSIONS FOR CPA FIRM MANAGING PARTNERS AND CHAPTER LEADERS. DURING THE 2018-2019 FISCAL YEAR, NYSSCPA CHAPTERS COLLECTIVELY SPONSORED MORE THAN 236 CPE PROGRAMS FOR APPROXIMATELY 4,057 REGISTRANTS. THEY ALSO PRODUCED MORE THAN 67 NON-CPE PROGRAMS, RANGING FROM GOLF OUTINGS AND NETWORKING EVENTS FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS, TO COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENTS AND CHARITY FUNDRAISERS.
THE CPA JOURNALTHE CPA JOURNAL, THE NYSSCPA'S FLAGSHIP PUBLICATION, IS A MONTHLY, PEER-REVIEWED JOURNAL AIMED AT CPAS AND OTHER FINANCIAL PROFESSIONALS. IN JANUARY 2018, JUST WEEKS AFTER IT WAS PASSED INTO LAW, THE JOURNAL PUBLISHED ITS FIRST LOOK AT THE TAX CUTS AND JOBS ACT OF 2017, AND THE BROAD IMPACT THE LEGISLATION WILL HAVE ON CORPORATIONS, INDIVIDUALS, INVESTORS, ESTATES AND TRUSTS, NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, AND STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS. TO DATE WE HAVE PUBLISHED OVER 53 ARTICLES ON THE IMPACT OF TCJA. ADDITIONALLY, IN 2019, WE FEATURED THE RESULTS OF THE FOURTH ANNUAL NYSSCPA/ROSENBERG SURVEY, EXCLUSIVE TO THE CPA JOURNAL. WE IDENTIFIED TRENDS IN CPA FIRM MANAGEMENT, REVENUE GROWTH, INCOME PER EQUITY PARTNER, AS WELL AS THE AGE AND GENDER OF PARTNERS AND STAFF. THE JOURNAL ALSO DEVOTED ISSUES TO THE SUBJECTS OF SUSTAINABILITY AND INTEGRATED REPORTING, EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES, SUCH AS BLOCKCHAIN, CLOUD COMPUTING, AND ROBOTIC PROCESS AUTOMATION; A ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON THE DECISION RELEVANCE OF FINANCIAL REPORTING, AND THE 18TH ANNUAL TAX SOFTWARE SURVEY. THE QUALITY OF THE JOURNAL'S CONTENT WAS RECOGNIZED BY FOLIO, PLACING AS A FINALIST IN FOUR CATEGORIES AT THE MAGAZINE'S 2017/18 EDDIE & OZZIE AWARDS AND IN FIVE CATEGORIES AT THE FOLIO MAGAZINE AWARDS CONFERENCE IN 2019. WEBSITE, CPAJOURNAL.COM, CONTINUED TO GROW WITH THE SITE'S MONTHLY UNIQUE PAGE VIEWS RISING FROM 44,000 AT THE BEGINNING OF THE FISCAL YEAR TO AS MUCH AS 133,000 THROUGHOUT THE 2018/2019.
