THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION, OR MOST SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITY, INVOLVES THE HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUM. OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC TWELVE MONTHS PER YEAR THE HOUSE WAS FIRST OPEN TO THE PUBLIC IN 1936. IT IS VISITED BY THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUALS EACH YEAR. IT GIVES VISITORS AN INSIGHT INTO WHAT LIFE OF A WEALTHY MERCHANT FAMILY WOULD HAVE BEEN AROUND THE TIME OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR. THE HOUSE IS ESSENTIALLY A WORTHWHILE EXPERIENCE FOR SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN WHO VISIT THE HOUSE WITH THEIR TEACHERS. THEY ARE ALWAYS AMAZED AT THE DIFFERENCE IN THEIR LIVES AS COMPARED TO LIFE IN THE 19TH CENTURY.
PRESERVATION AND OPERATION OF THE MERCHANTS HOUSE MUSEUM.
THE MERCHANT'S HOUSE MUSEUM CAN ILLUSTRATE TO VISITING SCHOOL CHILDREN HOW THEIR LIFE IS SO MUCH DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF THEIR PEERS IN A MID 19TH CENTURY WEALTHY HOME DURING THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR.
