EMPLOYING CONSERVATION FOR MEANINGFUL AND LASTING GOALS, THE OPEN SPACE INSTITUTE, INC. (OSI) PROTECTS LAND OF SCENIC, NATURAL AND HISTORIC IMPORTANCE IN THE EASTERN U.S. AND CANADA TO PROTECT WATER SOURCES; IMPROVE PARKS; FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE; AND PROVIDE HABITAT.
OSI AND ITS SUPPORTING ORGANIZATION, OPEN SPACE INSTITUTE LAND TRUST, PROTECTS LAND.
BEAVERKILL VALLEY LAND PROTECTION: OSI HAS PROTECTED MORE THAN 10,000 ACRES IN THE WESTERN CATSKILL REGION OF NEW YORK STATE, INCLUDING THE SCENIC BEAVERKILL VALLEY. THESE EFFORTS INCLUDE ESTABLISHING AND FUNDING AN INDEPENDENT PUBLIC CHARITY, THE BEAVERKILL VALLEY LAND TRUST, INC. (BVLT), IN ORDER TO FURTHER THE CONSERVATION OF THIS IMPORTANT REGION. IN 2019 OSI TRANSFERRED LAND AND CONSERVATION EASEMENTS TO BVLT; MADE RESTRICTIVE GRANTS TO BVLT; AND PROVIDED SUBSTANTIAL IN-KIND SERVICES TO BVLT IN ORDER TO FURTHER ITS PROGRAM OF PROTECTING THE BEAVERKILL VALLEY.
CONSERVATION COMMUNITIES: OSI SUPPORTS GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATIONS; PROMOTES YOUNG ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS; AND PROVIDES GRANTS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION. THE CITIZEN ACTION INITIATIVE SUPPORTED 27 GROUPS IN 2019, MANY OF WHICH ADDRESS URBAN ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES BY PROVIDING FINANCIAL, LEGAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT. OSI ALSO ADMINISTERS THE MALCOLM GORDON CHARITABLE FUND AND THE BARNABAS MCHENRY HUDSON RIVER VALLEY AWARDS FUND TO MAKE GRANTS FOR LAND CONSERVATION, PUBLIC EDUCATION, AND THE PROMOTION OF THE NEXT GENERATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERS. LIKEWISE, OSI'S CONSERVATION DIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP SEEKS TO PROMOTE GREATER DIVERSITY WITHIN THE ENVIRONMENTAL FIELD BY PROVIDING RECENT STUDENTS ONE-YEAR, SALARIED FELLOWSHIPS AT OSI.
OSI SAVES LAND TO PROTECT WATER SOURCES; CREATE AND MAKE PARKS MORE WELCOMING; FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE; PROVIDE WILDLIFE HABITAT; AND STRENGTHEN COMMUNITIES. THESE GOALS ARE REALIZED THROUGH ITS SUPPORTING ORGANIZATION, THE OPEN SPACE INSTITUTE LAND TRUST ("OSILT"). WORKING IN THE EASTERN U.S. AND CANADA, OSI ACHIEVES THESE GOALS THROUGH DIRECT ACQUISITION AND CONSERVATION EASEMENTS. OSILT ALSO PROVIDES GRANTS AND LOANS, PRIMARILY TO OTHER LAND TRUSTS, IN SELECTED GEOGRAPHIES THAT PROTECT WATER QUALITY, HABITAT, AND LANDS THAT SAFEGUARD WILDLIFE IN A CHANGING CLIMATE. IN 2019, OSILT PROTECTED 26,400 ACRES WITH A FAIR VALUE OF $44.6 MILLION AND MADE 34 GRANTS TOTALING $7.8 MILLION, RESULTING THE PROTECTION OF 17,000 ACRES IN NINE STATES AND PROVINCES WITH A FAIR VALUE OF $33 MILLION.
