THE ORGANIZATION PROMOTES A GREATER APPRECIATION OF NEW YORK CITY'S BUILT-ENVIRONMENT.
IN 2019, THE 17TH ANNUAL OHNY WEEKEND TOOK PLACE ON OCTOBER 18-20,2019, IN NEIGHBORHOODS THROUGHOUT NEW YORK CITY'S FIVE BOROUGHS. FROM ICONIC LANDMARKS TO HISTORIC HOMES TO COMMERCIAL OFFICE BUILDINGS,OHNY WEEKEND OPENED MORE THAN 300 OF NEW YORK'S MOST ARCHITECTURALLY AND CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT BUILDINGS FOR PUBLIC TOURS AND TALKS WITH ARCHITECTS, PLANNERS, CITY OFFICIALS, HISTORIANS, AND OTHERS. OHNY WEEKEND IS A VITAL CIVIC PLATFORM FOR ENGAGING A BROAD PUBLIC IN A CONVERSATION ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN TO SHAPING OUR EXPERIENCE OF THE CITY. 1,500 PEOPLE REGISTERED TO VOLUNTEER FOR THE 2019 OHNY WEEKEND, AND OHNY ESTIMATES THAT MORE THAN 85,000 VISITORS ATTENDED ONE OR MORE SITES DURING THE COURSE OF THE THREE-DAY FESTIVAL. IN ADDITION TO THE ANNUAL OHNY WEEKEND, OPEN HOUSE NEW YORK ALSOORGANIZED MORE THAN THIRTY PUBLIC PROGRAMS OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEAR.THESE INCLUDED TOURS AND TALKS PART OF THE THEMATIC SERIES "THE MOVING CITY," WHICH EXPLORED THE ARCHITECTURE AND INFRASTRUCTURE OF NEW YORK'S TRANSPORTATION AND MOBILITY SYSTEM. OHNY ALSO CONTINUED ITS "PROJECTS IN PLANNING" SERIES WITH ARCHITECTS AND DEVELOPERS SPEAKING ABOUT NEW LARGE-SCALE PROJECTS IN THE EARLY STAGES OF DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT. ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS INCLUDED BOAT TOURS NEW YORK HARBOR; PREVIEW TOURS OF IMPORTANT NEW PROJECTS SUCH AS THE CENTER FOR FICTION AND THE MADISON SQURE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB; AND A THREE-PART SERIES OF TOURS ABOUT CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE IN NEW YORK CITY.
