The Playwrights Realm is devoted to supporting early-career playwrights along the journey of playwriting, helping them hone their craft, fully realize their vision, and build meaningful artistic careers. We pride ourselves on providing a very high level of support for the playwrights we work with and meeting their individual needs by making an extensive array of resources available to them. This inch-wide/mile-deep approach allows our promising writers to benefit from a level of artistic and financial assistance that is otherwise unavailable to them, giving them a rare chance to be well-supported artists at the early stages of their careers. The Realm's innovative model combines elements of producing houses, development centers, and artist service organizations to provide a wide range of resources to help our playwrights create new work and gain a foothold in the theater community. In FY19, we supported the work of 19 playwrights, and 3,398 people attended our programming.Programming at The Realm is comprised of four main elements: (1) Our Production Season, which produces New York premieres of Off-Broadway plays by early-career playwrights; in FY19 our productions took place at The Duke on 42nd Street. The plays were The Revolving Cycles Truly and Steadily Rolld by Page One Playwright Jonathan Payne, which was attended by 2,451 audience members in total; and Beyond the Realm, a festival of works in progress by MJ Kaufman, Nia Witherspoon, Michael Yates Crowley, and Asiimwe Deborah Kawe, which was offered for free to the public and attended by 590 audience members; (2) The Page One Residency, a season-long residency following the playwrights Realm premiere, which includes office space and health insurance among other perks; (3) The Alumni Playwrights Program, which provides our past Page One Playwrights with continued support for up to ten years to ensure that early-career playwrights truly have the chance to emerge with resources including play development meetings, yearly readings in our Next Edition Series, and professional development funds; (4) The Writing Fellowship, which seeks four promising early-career writers each year through an open submission process and provides Fellows with creative guidance, monthly meetings, a public reading in our INKD Festival, and more. In FY19, our INK'D Festival was attended by 318 audience members at The Loft at Theater 511, and (5) Our Scratchpad Series, which aims to erase the geographic and economic limitations of work shopping a show with early-career playwrights from across the nation.
