THE POETRY SOCIETY OF AMERICA, THE NATION'S OLDEST POETRY ORGANIZATION, WAS FOUNDED IN 1910. ITS MISSION IS TO BUILD A LARGER AND MORE DIVERSE AUDIENCE FOR POETRY, TO ENCOURAGE A DEEPER APPRECIATION OF THE VITALITY (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O)AND BREADTH OF POETRY IN THE CULTURAL CONVERSATION, AND TO PLACE POETRY AT THE CROSSROADS OF AMERICAN LIFE.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS:EACH YEAR THE PSA PRESENTS A DIVERSE ARRAY OF PUBLIC POETRY PROGRAMS INCITIES INCLUDING LOS ANGELES, NEW YORK, SAN FRANCISCO, AND OTHERS, AS WELL AS ONLINE PROGRAMS. PROGRAMS INCLUDE LIVE READINGS AND DISCUSSIONS, DIGITAL PUBLICATION OF POEMS AND ESSAYS ON POETRY, THE DISTRIBUTION OF POETRY POSTCARDS TO HOMEBOUND SENIORS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH MEALS ON WHEELS CHAPTERS, AND OUTDOOR POETRY EXHIBITIONS. PSA FREQUENTLY PARTNERS WITH MUSEUMS, UNIVERSITIES, ARTS ORGANIZATIONS, AND OTHER NONPROFITS TO CREATE UNIQUE PROGRAMMING THAT CELEBRATES THE WORK OF POETS AND BUILDS A COMMUNITY OF READERS FOR POETRY.
ANNUAL AWARDS:THE PSA OFFERS 12 AWARDS, AND OVER THE PAST 100 YEARS, THESE AWARDSHAVE BEEN GIVEN TO BOTH ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING POETS. RECIPIENTS HAVEINCLUDED COUNTEE CULLEN, LANGSTON HUGHES, MARIANNE MOORE, E.E.CUMMINGS, ELIZABETH BISHOP, MARIE PONSOT AND SONIA SANCHEZ. THE AWARDSHONOR EVERY STAGE OF A POET'S ARTISTIC CAREER, FROM A SINGLE POEMWRITTEN BY A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT, TO A FIRST BOOK, TO A LIFETIMEACHIEVEMENT.
PSA EMERGING WRITERS CHAPBOOK FELLOWSHIP:EACH YEAR, PSA AWARDS 4 EMERGING WRITERS A FELLOWSHIP DESIGNED TOSUPPORT AND ADVANCE THEIR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE FIELD THROUGHEDITORIAL SUPPORT, PUBLICATION, EXPOSURE, AND AN INTRODUCTION INTO THELITERARY COMMUNITY. WINNERS ARE SELECTED BY DISTINGUISHED POETS, ANDPSA STAFF WORK WITH THEM TO EDIT AND ARRANGE THEIR POEMS INTO A 20-30PAGE CHAPBOOK, WHICH IS PRINTED IN AN EDITION OF 500. THE VOLUMESCONTAIN AN INTRODUCTION BY THE SELECTING JUDGE. THE BOOKS ARE LAUNCHED ATA PUBLIC READING AT THE FESTIVAL OF THE CHAPBOOK IN NEW YORK CITY.
