POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE, TOGETHER WITH NYPD AND THE LAW ENFORCEMENT COMMUNITY, SUPPORTS AND INSPIRES NEW YORK CITY YOUTH TO REALIZE THEIR FULL INDIVIDUAL POTENTIAL AS PRODUCTIVE MEMBERS OF SOCIETY.
CENTER OPERATIONS - OVER 8,000 K-8TH GRADE STUDENTS TAKE PART IN AFTER SCHOOL AND SUMMER DAY CAMP PROGRAMS AT 19 CENTERS. PROGRAMS HAVE A STRONG FOCUS ON SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATH (STEM), LITERACY, NUTRITION, ARTS AND FITNESS.
CHILD CARE - THROUGH SEVEN EARLY LEARN AND UNIVERSAL PRE-KINDERGARTEN CENTERS PAL HELPS APPROXIMATELY 560 YOUNG CHILDREN, AGES 2-5, DEVELOP SOCIAL SKILLS AND BUILD STRONG FOUNDATIONS FOR FUTURE ACHIEVEMENT IN SCHOOL. THROUGH THE "BRIDGING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP INITIATIVE" THE PROGRAMS HAVE A STRONG FOCUS ON LITERACY.
TEEN PROGRAMS - PAL HELPS OLDER YOUTH GAIN WORK SKILLS TO PROMOTE LONG-TERM EDUCATIONAL AND CAREER OUTCOMES. THESE PROGRAMS, WHICH HAVE BEEN OPERATIONAL FOR OVER A DECADE, ARE STRENGTHENED BY LONGSTANDING PARTNERSHIPS WITH DOZENS OF BUSINESSES THAT PROVIDE REAL WORK EXPERIENCE. PROGRAMS INCLUDE:EVENING TEEN CENTERS: 10 PAL TEEN CENTERS ARE FREE SPACES WHERE ALMOST 2,600 OLDER YOUTH ACCESS EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT, LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS AND SPORTS AND RECREATION. LOCATED IN COMMUNITIES WITH HIGH RATES OF JUVENILE CRIME, TEEN CENTERS ARE A LOW-COST BUT HIGHLY EFFECTIVE APPROACH TO KEEPING AT-RISK TEENS SAFE AND ENGAGED IN PROSOCIAL ACTIVITIES. COLLEGE ACCESS PROGRAM: PAL PROVIDES 240 AT-RISK HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH WITH INTENSIVE ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND CAREER EXPLORATION. THIS PROGRAM HELPS YOUTH AT RISK OF DROPPING OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL TO NOT ONLY COMPLETE THEIR HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA, BUT TO ENTER HIGHER EDUCATION OR THE WORKFORCE UPON GRADUATION.YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM: PAL PROVIDES NEARLY 1,200 YOUTH AGES 14-21 WITH SUMMER EMPLOYMENT AT DOZENS OF BUSINESS OFFICES, RETAILERS, HEALTH CARE CENTERS, UNIVERSITIES AND PAL CENTERS. DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, PAL ALSO PROVIDES CONTINUED WORK EXPERIENCE, FURTHER PROMOTING SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND FINANCIAL STABILITY. YOUTH LINK: AN ALTERNATIVE-TO-INCARCERATION PROGRAM, CONNECTS APPROXIMATELY 125 YOUTH PER YEAR WHO HAVE BEEN ARRESTED WITH COUNSELING, TUTORING, LIFE SKILLS WORKSHOPS, MENTORSHIP AND SPORTS.
