THE PORTER AVENUE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT - ALSO KNOWN AS THE PETER JAY SHARP CENTER FOR OPPORTUNITY - IS A 400-BED STATE-OF-THE-ART TRANSITIONAL RESIDENCE FOR HOMELESS MEN DEVELOPED AND OPERATED BY THE DOE FUND, A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION COMMITTED TO ENABLING HOMELESS INDIVIDUALS TO ACHIEVE SELF-SUFFICIENT LIVES. THE CENTER PROVIDES THREE DISTINCT SERVICES. AS ONE OF THREE ASSESSMENT AND REFERRAL LOCATIONS IN THE NEW YORK CITY SHELTER SYSTEM, THE FACILITY HOUSES SOME INDIVIDUALS ON A SHORT-TERM BASIS UNTIL THEY ARE ASSIGNED TO AN APPROPRIATE FACILITY AND/OR PROGRAM. THE CENTER ALSO OFFERS PRE-PROGRAM BEDS TO INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE WORKING (OR ARE LOOKING FOR WORK) BUT DO NOT HAVE A PLACE TO LIVE. LASTLY, HALF OF THE BEDS ARE FOR PARTICIPANTS IN THE DOE FUND'S READY, WILLING AND ABLE PAID WORK AND JOB TRAINING PROGRAM. EQUIPPED WITH CLASSROOMS, A COMPUTER LAB, A LIBRARY, A MEDICAL SUITE, A SKY-LIT DINING ROOM, AND A PROFESSIONAL KITCHEN, AS WELL AS SPACIOUS AND COMFORTABLE DORMITORIES AND BATHROOMS. THE CENTER - ONCE A KNITTING MILL - MAINTAINS A CULTURE OF UPWARD MOBILITY AND REPRESENTS THE FUTURE OF HOMELESS SERVICES IN NEW YORK CITY.
