PSS IS AN INNOVATIVE MULTI-SERVICE AGENCY WHOSE MISSION IS TO STRENGTHEN THE CAPACITY OF OLDER NEW YORKERS, THEIR FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES TO THRIVE. PSS OPERATES TEN SENIOR CENTERS, TWO APARTMENT BUILDINGS, THE CIRCLE OF CARE CARE CAREGIVER PROGRAM, COMING OF AGE, AND PSS LIFE! UNIVERSITY.
PSS'S TEN SENIOR CENTERS ASSURE THAT OLDER ADULTS REMAIN HEALTHY, ENGAGED AND CONNECTED. THESE TEN CENTERS SERVE 140,000 NUTRITIOUS MEALS ANNUALLY TO HUNDREDS OF DIFFERENT ELDERLY PERSONS EACH DAY. CENTER STAFF QUICKLY STEPPED UP TO CONFRONT THE CHALLENGES OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC BY PROVIDING GRAB AND GO MEALS, PPE, EMERGENCY FOOD/PANTRY DISTRIBUTION, AND ESSENTIAL HOME SUPPLIES. THOUSANDS OF WELLNESS CALLS WERE MADE TO QUARANTINED EDERLY EVERY MONTH. CENTERS ALSO BEGAN TO ADDRESS THE DIGITAL DIVIDE THAT BECAME MORE APPARENT BY PARTNERING WITH TECH TRAINING COMPANIES TO HELP SENIORS DEVELOP DIGITAL CAPACITY.
THE PSS CIRCLE OF CARE CAREGIVERS SUPPORT PROGRAM PROVIDES COUNSELING, CASE ASSISTANCE, SUPPORT GROUPS, RESPITE AND OTHER SERVICES TO FAMILY MEMBERS PROVIDING CARE TO A FRAIL, HOMEBOUND, ILL OR DISABLED OLDER ADULT. OVER 3,000 PEOPLE EACH YEAR ARE SERVED. CIRCLE OF CARE STAFF CONTINUED TO PROVIDE SERVICES AND SUPPORT DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC BY SWITCHING TO VIRTUAL CARE CONSULTATIONS, SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS VIA ZOOM, AND INFORMATIVE WEBINARS AND TRAININGS VIRTUALLY VIA PSS LIFE UNIVERSITY. CREATIVE SOLUTIONS TO OFFERING JOINT ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES (EVENTS BOTH CAREGIVERS AND THEIR LOVED ONES COULD ENJOY TOGETHER) WERE IMPLEMENTED TO SUPPORT FAMILIES DURING THIS GLOBAL CRISIS.
THE PSS/WSF GRANDPARENT FAMILY APARTMENTS, THE ONLY RESIDENCE IN NEW YORK STATE SPECIFICALLY FOR GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN, IS A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED MODEL. THE 50 UNIT RESIDENCE SERVES AS THE HUB FOR PSS KINSHIP CARE SERVICES ASSISTING BOTH GRANDPARENTS AND GRANDCHILDREN LIVING IN THE APARTMENT AND IN THE COMMUNITY. AN AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM AND VARIOUS YOUNG ADULTS PROGRAMS KEEP THE YOUTH FOCUSED, ACADEMICALLY ENGAGED AND SUCCESSFUL. AT THE VERY ONSET OF COVID-19, STAFF IMMEDIATELY IMPLEMENTED PRUDENT PROTOCOLS AND PROCEDURES TO PROTECT THE RESIDENTS AND SUCCESSFULLY PREVENT COVID INFECTION. VIRTUAL PROGRAMS FOR THE YOUTH WERE QUICKLY DEVELOPED TO HELP THEM REMAIN ACADEMICALLY SUPPORTED AND FOCUSED.
