Primary Stages is an Off-Broadway theater company dedicated to inspiring, supporting and sharing the art of playwriting. We operate on the strongly held belief that the future of American theater relies on nurturing individual playwrights and giving them the artistic support needed to create new work. Since our founding in 1984, we have produced more than 135 new plays. Primary Stages was honored with the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Body of Work, which encompasses much more than the plays we produce for the stage. Primary Stages supports playwrights and develops new works through commissions, workshops, readings and our two flagship programs: The Dorothy Strelsin New American Writers Group and the Marvin and Anne Einhorn School of Performing Arts (ESPA). Through these programs, Primary Stages advocates for our artists, helping them make important and often transformative connections within the theater community.
PRIMARY STAGES IS DEDICATED TO INSPIRING, SUPPORTING AND SHARING THE ART OF PLAYWRITING.
During the 2019/20 Season, Primary Stages produced the HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS FESTIVAL featuring new works by Judy Gold, Jason OConnell, and the Latinx Playwrights Circle; and the Off-Broadway Premiere of Charles Buschs THE CONFESSION OF LILY DARE at the Cherry Lane Theatre. We also hosted Jiehae Park as our second Tow Foundation Playwright-in-Residence and supported 8 writers in our Dorothy Streslin New American Writers Group. We served over 700 theater artists at all career levels through classes and workshops at the Einhorn School for Performing Arts taught by 80 professionals and experts in their respective fields. We also served over 600 NYC public school students through our Free Student Matinees and Teenwrights programs. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Primary Stages successfully transitioned our core artistic and educational programs to online and launched our new Primary Plus: A Virtual Community program, featuring free master classes, lunch-and-learns, and other special events to keep artists, students, and audiences connected to Primary Stages and each other during the pandemic.
