Organizations Filed Purposes: To serve as a resource and advocacy organization for low-income and otherwise disadvantaged restaurant workers across the country, providing job training, support services, research and advocacy for needy restaurant work

MEMBERSHIP We launched a Law and Organizing Department, which worked conducted organizing training for our staff and worker leaders in One Fair Wage campaign states. We also trained all our staff members on a new database, EveryAction, to better track membership growth and retention. In 2019, our Law and Organizing Department plus ROC chapter staff have helped file many unfair labor practice, EEOC, or wage board cases as well as providing know your rights training to hundreds of workers. We grew our online members by more than 20,000 in a single year. In addition, we increased the number of RAISE restaurants to more than 850 by the end of the year. The program now includes informational materials and webinars and rapid response support from our Legal and Organizing Department departments and has grown exponentially to include more than 400 restaurants and 13,000 consumers and restaurant workers. Our Raise work also included technical assistance and training by the Haas business school of Berkeley.

THREATS TO RESTAURANT WORKERS ROC United focused on resisting activities that could hurt restaurant workers. This includes helping defeat the decision to make tips the property of restaurant owners. In addition, following approval from our Board and membership, ROC United was also a leading plaintiff in a high-profile lawsuit against the Trump Hotels for violating the Emoluments Clause of the US Constitution.

INCREASED WAGES ROC United led One Fair Wage public education efforts in NY, DC, and MI, to call for the elimination of the subminimum wage for tipped workers. In Michigan, we launched a We The People organizing process to invite hundreds of thousands of Michiganders to living room conversations, town hall meetings, community dinners, and teach-ins to openly discuss issues that unite people across the state. We worked with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, who traveled to promote our One Fair Wage campaign in these three locations. We also launched a Tipped Worker Resource Center TWRC to provide lighter-touch support to states that do not have a ROC chapter office.
