Organizations Filed Purposes: THE RUBIN MUSEUM OF ART EXPLORES AND CELEBRATES THE DIVERSITY AND UNIQUENESS OF HIMALAYAN ART, IDEAS, AND CULTURE ACROSS HISTORY AND INTO THE PRESENT. WITH ITS GLOBALLY RENOWNED COLLECTION, LARGELY DRAWN FROM THE TIBETAN PLATEAU AND SURROUNDING AREAS, THE RUBIN FOSTERS AN UNDERSTANDING AND APPRECIATION OF THIS REGION BY RELATING ITS ART AND IDEAS TO OUR SHARED HUMAN EXPERIENCE TODAY. INSPIRED BY THE PHILOSOPHICAL TRADITIONS OF BUDDHISM AND HINDUISM AND ALIGNED WITH ONGOING RESEARCH INTO LEARNING, BEHAVIOR, AND THE BRAIN, THE RUBIN OFFERS INNOVATIVE EXHIBITIONS AND PROGRAMS THAT EXAMINE PROVOCATIVE IDEAS ACROSS THE ARTS AND EXPLORE THE MIND. THROUGH THIS WORK, THE MUSEUM SERVES AS A SPACE FOR REFLECTION AND PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION, OPENING WINDOWS TO INNER WORLDS SO VISITORS CAN BETTER NAVIGATE OUTER ONES.

THE RUBIN MUSEUM OF ART IS A DYNAMIC ENVIRONMENT THAT STIMULATES LEARNING, PROMOTES UNDERSTANDING, AND INSPIRES PERSONAL CONNECTIONS TO THE IDEAS, CULTURES, AND ART OF HIMALAYAN ASIA.

EXHIBITIONS AND INSTALLATIONS IN 2019 VISITORS ENCOUNTERED THE EXHIBITION FAITH AND EMPIRE: ART AND POLITICS IN TIBETAN BUDDHISM, WHICH FEATURED MORE THAN 60 OBJECTS FROM THE 8TH TO THE 19TH CENTURY, MANY FROM THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTION. IT EXPLORED HOW ART AND RELIGION PROVIDED A DIVINE MEANS TO POWER AND LEGITIMACY TO RULE. IN THE POWER OF INTENTION: REINVENTING THE (PRAYER) WHEEL, WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION WERE PAIRED WITH CONTEMPORARY ART TO ILLUMINATE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OUR INTENTIONS, COMMITMENTS, AND ACTIONS. VISITORS HAD MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE WITH CONTEMPORARY ART IN SHRINE ROOM PROJECTS: SHIVA AHMADI/GENESIS BREYER P-ORRIDGE/TSHERIN SHERPA, WHICH FEATURED ARTISTS REINTERPRETING TRADITIONAL AND RELIGIOUS ICONOGRAPHY AND PRACTICES THROUGH SCULPTURE, PAINTING, AND VIDEO, AS WELL AS IN CLAPPING WITH STONES: ART AND ACTS OF RESISTANCE, WHICH PRESENTED A MEDITATION ON THE SPIRIT OF POWER AND NON-CONFORMITY THROUGH ARTWORKS BY 10 CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. SHAHIDUL ALAM: TRUTH TO POWER FURTHER EXPLORED ACTS OF RESISTANCE, AS IT MARKED THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE U.S. RETROSPECTIVE OF THE RENOWNED BANGLADESHI PHOTOGRAPHER, ACTIVIST, AND INSTITUTION BUILDER SHAHIDUL ALAM.
