SALVADORI CENTER TEACHERS STUDENTS ABSTRACT CONCEPTS OF MATH, ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND SCIENCE BY ENGAGING THEM IN REAL WORLD DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES.
THE SALVADORI CENTER, WHICH PROVIDES DIRECT SERVICES TO STUDENTS THROUGH IN-SCHOOL, AFTER-SCHOOL, AND SUMMER MULTI-DAY PROGRAMS, CELEBRATES A COLLABORATIVE, HANDS-ON, PROJECT-BASED APPROACH TO LEARNING THROUGH THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT ~ BUILDINGS, BRIDGES, PARKS, AND COMMUNITIES. DESPITE LAST YEAR (THE 2019/2020 ACADEMIC YEAR) BEING DISRUPTED BY COVID-19, WE STILL MANAGED TO DELIVER PROGRAMS IN 207 CLASSES WITH 6,031 STUDENTS THROUGH 72,909 STUDENT IMPACT HOURS IN 2,315 SESSIONS. IN THE 2018/2019 ACADEMIC YEAR, WE DELIVERED PROGRAMS IN 295 CLASSES WITH 8,519 STUDENTS THROUGH 96,302 STUDENT IMPACT HOURS IN 3,756 SESSIONS. THAT IS A 304% INCREASE OVER THE LAST EIGHT YEARS ~ MORE THAN 4 TIMES AS MANY STUDENTS! STUDENTS LEARN NEW THINGS ABOUT THE CITY THEY LIVE IN. THEY SEE THE MATH AND SCIENCE IN THE BUILDINGS THEY ENTER, THE BRIDGES THEY CROSS, AND THE PARKS THEY PLAY IN. THEY QUICKLY UNDERSTAND WHY MATH AND SCIENCE ARE RELEVANT TO THEIR LIVES. THE TEACHERS WE COACH BECOME OUR STRONGEST ADVOCATES AND SCHOOLS RETURN TO WORK WITH US YEAR AFTER YEAR. IN FACT, OVER 75% OF SCHOOLS RETURN EACH YEAR. SALVADORI EDUCATORS WORK WITH SCHOOLS TO BUILD DURABLE SKILLS, ENGAGE ALL STUDENTS, PROVIDE RESULTS THAT REFLECT HIGH LEVELS OF OWNERSHIP, AND DIRECTLY SUPPORT EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS THROUGH THE (4) C'S: " COLLABORATION ~ WORKING TOGETHER TO HYPOTHESIZE, BUILD, TEST, AND SOLVE PROBLEMS" CRITICAL THINKING ~ ANALYZING HOW AND WHY THINGS WORK" CREATIVITY ~ POSING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS TO REAL-WORLD CHALLENGES" COMMUNICATION ~ LISTENING, LEARNING, AND ARTICULATING COMPLEX IDEAS AND CONCEPTS MORE IMPORTANTLY, WE HAVE EIGHT YEARS OF INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENTS THAT SHOW SALVADORI PROGRAMS YIELD STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE CHANGE IN STUDENT COMPREHENSION AROUND GRADE-SPECIFIC MATH AND SCIENCE CONCEPTS. AND LAST YEAR, A NEW ASSESSMENT SHOWED THAT SALVADORI STUDENTS PERFORMED SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER ON STANDARDIZED TESTS! OUR PROGRAMS HELP SCHOOLS: " MAKE MATH, SCIENCE, AND THE ARTS INTELLECTUALLY ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL LEARNERS" INCREASE STUDENT COMPREHENSION AND SUCCESS AT GRADE-LEVEL MATH AND SCIENCE" LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR FUTURE STEAM DEGREES AND/OR CAREERS PERHAPS EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE, A NEW YORK UNIVERSITY STUDY COMPARED SALVADORI STUDENTS WITH NON-SALVADORI STUDENTS AND FOUND THAT STUDENTS WHO DIDN'T RECEIVE SALVADORI PROGRAMS SHOWED A STEADY DECREASE IN THEIR PERCEPTION THAT MATH AND SCIENCE ARE RELEVANT. STUDENTS WHO RECEIVED SALVADORI INCREASED THEIR PERCEPTION THAT MATH AND SCIENCE ARE RELEVANT AND MAINTAINED A SENSE THAT MATH AND SCIENCE ARE RELEVANT EVEN MONTHS AFTER THE PROGRAM ENDED. IN SUMMARY, SALVADORI PROGRAMS: " PROMOTE COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS" ENGAGE STUDENTS THROUGH PROJECT-BASED EXERCISES" USE THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AS A VEHICLE FOR LEARNING" EMPLOY COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING THAT INVOLVES ALL PARTICIPANTS" PRODUCE RESULTS THAT REFLECT HIGH LEVELS OF CREATIVITY AND OWNERSHIP
