SIGNATURE THEATRE CELEBRATES PLAYWRIGHTS AND GIVES THEM AN ARTISTIC HOME. SIGNATURE MAKES AN EXTENDED COMMITMENT TO A PLAYWRIGHT'S BODY OF WORK, PRODUCING SEVERAL PLAYS BY EACH RESIDENT WRITER AND DELIVERING AN INTIMATE AND IMMERSIVE JOURNEY INTO THE PLAYWRIGHT'S SINGULAR VISION.
FOUNDED IN 1991 BY THE LATE JAMES HOUGHTON, THE TONY AWARD-WINNING SIGNATURE THEATRE IS NOW LED BY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR PAIGE EVANS AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR HAROLD WOLPERT. SIGNATURE FOSTERS A CULTURAL COMMUNITY WITHIN OUR PERMANENT HOME ON WEST 42ND STREET, THE FRANK GEHRY-DESIGNED PERSHING SQUARE SIGNATURE CENTER, WHICH BOASTS THREE THEATRES AND TWO REHEARSAL ROOMS, INCLUDING THE FORD STUDIO, A FLEXIBLE SPACE THAT CAN BE CONVERTED INTO A 99-SEAT THEATRE.SIGNATURE CONDUCTS ITS PROGRAMMING AT THE CENTER. RESIDENCY 1, SIGNATURE'S FOUNDING PLAYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM, IS A YEAR-LONG, INTENSIVE EXPLORATION OF A SINGLE WRITER'S BODY OF WORK. RESIDENCY 5, THE ONLY PROGRAM OF ITS KIND, WAS LAUNCHED AT THE CENTER TO SUPPORT MULTIPLE PLAYWRIGHTS AS THEY BUILD BODIES OF WORK. IT GUARANTEES EACH WRITER THREE PRODUCTIONS OVER A FIVE-YEAR PERIOD. OUR LEGACY PROGRAM INVITES PAST SIGNATURE WRITERS FROM BOTH RESIDENCIES TO RETURN FOR PRODUCTIONS OF PREMIERE OR SIGNATURE PLAYS.
SIGNATURE THEATRE'S 2019/20 SEASON FEATURED FOUR PLAYS BY A DIVERSE AND DYNAMIC GROUP OF FOUR CELEBRATED WRITERS: ANNA DEAVERE SMITH, THE LATE HORTON FOOTE, LAUREN YEE, AND KATORI HALL. THE WORK ON OUR STAGES ADDRESSED ISSUES AND THEMES OF POLICE BRUTALITY AND RACISM, CLASS, GENERATIONAL TRAUMA, FOUND FAMILY, QUEERNESS, AND LOVE. THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC FORCED SIGNATURE TO POSTPONE PRODUCTIONS OF PLAYS BY ANNA DEAVERE SMITH AND DOMINIQUE MORISSEAU TO A FUTURE SEASON. MACARTHUR FELLOW ANNA DEAVERE SMITH BEGAN HER RESIDENCY 1 WITH A FALL 2019 REVIVAL OF HER SEMINAL VERBATIM THEATRE WORK FIRES IN THE MIRROR, AND SIGNATURE WILL REVIVE A REVISED VERSION OF HER PLAY TWILIGHT: LOS ANGELES, 1992 IN A FUTURE SEASON. SIGNATURE REVIVED HORTON FOOTE'S THE YOUNG MAN FROM ATLANTA AS PART OF OUR LEGACY RESIDENCY PROGRAM. IN EARLY 2020 SIGNATURE PRODUCED THE NEW YORK PREMIERE OF LAUREN YEE'S CAMBODIAN ROCK BAND AND THE WORLD PREMIERE OF KATORI HALL'S THE HOT WING KING, BOTH OF WHICH HAD TO END THEIR RUNS EARLY BECAUSE OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. DURING OUR 2019/20 SEASON, SIGNATURE CONTINUED TO LEAD THE FIELD IN ARTS ACCESSIBILITY BY MAKING OUR PROGRAMMING AFFORDABLE TO ALL THROUGH THE SIGNATURE TICKET INITIATIVE: A GENERATION OF ACCESS. A SIGNIFICANT BARRIER TO CULTURAL PARTICIPATION IS COST, AND THE TICKET INITIATIVE SEEKS TO ELIMINATE THIS OBSTACLE. DURING SIGNATURE'S 2019/20 SEASON, TICKETS TO THE FIRST FIVE WEEKS OF EACH SEASON PRODUCTION WERE SUBSIDIZED TO $35 THROUGH THE TICKET INITIATIVE. THROUGH OUR SIGSPACE INITIATIVE, SIGNATURE PROVIDED ROBUST VIRTUAL ARTISTIC PROGRAMMING DURING THE PANDEMIC. THIS PROGRAMMING INCLUDED INTERVIEWS WITH OUR RESIDENT PLAYWRIGHTS, CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN THEATRE ARTISTS, PLAY READINGS, AND INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCES HOSTED BY OUR RESIDENT PLAYWRIGHTS. ALL SIGSPACE PROGRAMMING WAS FREE, AND PARTICIPATING ARTISTS WERE COMPENSATED. THROUGHOUT OUR 2019/20 SEASON AND FOR THE DURATION OF THE PANDEMIC, SIGNATURE WILL UPHOLD OUR MISSION TO CELEBRATE PLAYWRIGHTS AND GIVE THEM AN ARTISTIC HOME.
