SING FOR HOPE TRANSFORMS AND UPLIFTS INDIVIDUALS AND COMMUNITIES BY MOBILIZING ARTISTS IN VOLUNTEER SERVICE PROGRAMS, BRINGING THE POWER OF THE ARTS TO THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST. SINCE 2006, SING FOR HOPE'S ARTS OUTREACH PROGRAMS HAVE BROUGHT HOPE AND INSPIRATION TO THOUSANDS OF INDIVIDUALS IN UNDER-RESOURCED SCHOOLS, PUBLIC HOSPITALS, HOSPICES, VETERANS' CENTERS, AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS, NEIGHBORHOOD CENTERS, NURSING HOMES, AND DISABILITY NETWORKS. TO DATE, SING FOR HOPE HAS PARTNERED WITH OVER 250 NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, INVOLVED OVER 3,500 ARTISTS IN COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERISM, AND PLACED OVER 500 ARTIST-CREATED SING FOR HOPE PIANOS THROUGHOUT NYC'S PARKS AND PUBLIC SPACES FOR EVERYONE TO PLAY - A SYMBOL AND CELEBRATION OF ART FOR ALL.
IN FY2018, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, THE 50 SFH PIANOS FROM SUMMER 2017 WERE DELIVERED TO PERMANENT HOMES IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS ACROSS NYC'S 5 BOROUGHS TO START OR SUPPORT INTERNAL MUSIC PROGRAMMING. A TOTAL OF 212 MUSIC PROGRAMS WERE ADDED OR EXPANDED, INCLUDING 46 CHORUS PROGRAMS, 25 SCHOOL MUSICALS, AND 39 PIANO LESSON PROGRAMS. IN ADDITION TO THE PIANO, SCHOOLS RECEIVED AN OPENING ASSEMBLY INTRODUCING THEM TO SING FOR HOPE, A MONTHLY TEACHER RESOURCE NEWSLETTER, AND AVAILABLE IN-SCHOOL ARTS WORKSHOPS. THE MOST POPULAR WORKSHOPS CHOSEN BY SCHOOLS WERE AFRICAN DANCE AND IMPROV THEATER. SING FOR HOPE'S YOUTH ARTS PROGRAMMING EMPOWERS YOUNG ARTISTS TO BECOME CITIZEN ARTISTS AND SERVICE LEADERS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES THROUGH ARTISTIC EXPRESSION, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, AND ARTS VOLUNTEERISM.
SING FOR HOPE'S HEALING ARTS PROGRAM BRINGS DYNAMIC ARTS EXPERIENCES TO HOSPITAL PATIENTS, PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES, SENIORS, AND VETERANS. EACH WEEK, OUR VOLUNTEER ARTISTS SHARE THE UPLIFTING SPIRIT OF THE ARTS TO THESE LOCATIONS. CREATING SPECIALLY TAILORED PROGRAMMING FOR EACH COMMUNITY, HEALING ARTS PROVIDES A CONSISTENT AND RELIABLE SOURCE OF JOY AND INSPIRATION FOR PATIENTS AND CAREGIVERS IN THREE PRINCIPAL FORMATS: 1) BEDSIDE PERFORMANCE FOR NON-MOBILE PATIENTS TO ACCESS CREATIVE ARTS THROUGH A PERSONALIZED APPROACH WITHIN THEIR OWN ROOM, 2) COLLABORATIVE CONCERTS IN THE PUBLIC SPACES OF THESE BUILDINGS, TO ENHANCE THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE THROUGH INTEGRATION OF THE ARTS INTO THE LARGER HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENT, WITH PARTICIPATION HIGHLY ENCOURAGED BY PLANNING SINGALONGS AND INTERACTIVE PROGRAMS, AND 3) CREATIVE WORKSHOPS ENGAGING PARTICIPANTS IN THE CREATION OF A COLLABORATIVE WORK OF ART LED BY ARTISTS WHOSE DISCIPLINES ARE WELL-SUITED FOR POSITIVE GROUP INTERACTION (SUCH AS MASK MAKING SONGWRITING, AND MUSICALLY RESPONSIVE PAINTING)
THE SING FOR HOPE PIANO'S PROJECT IS THE ORGANIZATION'S FLAGSHIP COMMUNITY ARTS PROGRAM INITIATIVE, BRINGING ARTIST-DESIGNED PIANO'S TO THE PARKS AND PUBLIC SPACES OF NEW YORK CITY FOR TWO WEEKS DURING THE SUMMER. EACH WINTER, AN OUTSIDE PANEL OF ADJUDICATORS FROM LEADING CULTURAL AND COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS CHOSE ARTISTS FROM THE U.S AND ABROAD, BASED ON PROPOSALS THAT ADDRESS THE ARTISTS' VISION FOR THE PIANO ARTWORK. IN THE SPRING, USING THE PIANO'S AS THEIR CANVAS, THE ARTISTS CREATE AND PAINT THESE INTERACTIVE WORKS OF ART. THE SING FOR HOPE PIANOS THEN COME ALIVE IN A THREE-WEEK SUMMERTIME PUBLIC RESIDENCY THROUGHOUT THE PARKS AND PUBLIC SPACES OF THE FIVE BOROUGHS, WHERE THEY ARE OPEN FOR ANYONE AND EVERYONE TO ENJOY. AFTER THE PIANO'S TIME ON THE STREETS, THEY ARE TRANSPORTED TO UNDER-RESOURCED SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS, AND COMMUNITY CENTERS TO BECOME HUBS FOR FUTURE OUTREACH PROGRAMS. TO DATE, SING FOR HOPE HAS PLACED OVER 500 UNIQUE PIANOS THROUGHOUT THE FIVE BOROUGHS SINCE THE PROGRAM'S LAUNCH IN 2010. THE SING FOR HOPE PIANO'S PROGRAM IS NEW YORK CITY'S LARGEST ANNUAL PUBLIC ARTS PROJECT AND HAS RECEIVED OVER 2 BILLION MEDIA IMPRESSIONS.
