Theatrical production of new plays by women and trans/gender-nonconforming artists.
New Georges is a strategically small company with a national reputation for taking a first look at new and experimental plays, and as a responsive home for adventurous women and trans/gender-nonconforming theater artists. We cultivate our influential aesthetic in an open, nimble, artist-driven production environment, committing to unusual plays early in their development, equipping them with processes rooted in strong collaborations, and providing steady artistic support. We serve the largest ongoing working network of women and tgnc theater artists in New York City with career-transforming productions; a diverse slate of play and artist development programs; our indispensable workspace, The Room; and the cultivation of an artistic community (now 260 artists strong) and the collaborations that arise within it. Our hub and the primary resource with which we serve artists is The Room, New Georges permanent workspace for women theater artists, located in ART/New Yorks Spaces at 520. In addition to using The Room for our own programs and rehearsals, we provide space to members of our affiliated artist community for their own artistic projects at subsidized rates a critical program in Manhattan, where the scarcity of affordable space has significant impact on the development of new works. New Georges 26-year commitment to providing its artists with free or low-cost workspace is unique among downtown theaters and has incubated thousands of new plays. Our resources programs rooted in collaboration, access to creative workspace encourage artists to get up from the table and out from behind music stands, fostering the 3-D experimentation essential to highly theatrical plays. We measure impact not only in artistic output but in quality of process, depth of experimentation, new approaches ventured, next-step opportunities, and relationships made and strengthened. FY2019 Core Programs include:Productions, traditionally two per year (recent venues: The Flea [Anchor Partners], The ART/New York Theatres [pilot company], The Bushwick Starr, Dixon Place, HERE, 3LD, New Ohio Theatre); in FY2019 we produced LEAP AND THE NET WILL APPEAR by Chana Porter, directed by Tara Ahmadinejad, which ran June 16-30, 2019, at The Flea Theater.Subsidized Workspace Program for affiliated artists in The Room grants artists access to our citys most precious resource: clean, bright workspace at very low prices (120 artists per year). The Room celebrated its 25th anniversary in October 2019;The Audrey Residencies, our core play development program, engages participants in artistic life here for a full year. Working individually or in collaboration, residents spend up to 3 weeks in The Room developing a new-play project; at monthly meetings that are the heart of the program, project-based prompts lead residents to discuss the work on a substantive (rather than critical) level, resulting in revealing conversations that hasten camaraderie and deepen residents investment in each other. (11-16 residents work on 6-8 new plays annually); The New Georges Jam, a collaboration-based working lab for early-career women and tgnc theatermakers. Artist led, The Jam combines a structure of institutional support with the ethos of a collective to generate work that maximizes the three-dimensional potential of our form. Each year culminates in JAMboree, a proof of concept showing of works in process, May 14-15, 2019 at Dixon Place (the 26-member 2018-19 Jam is the largest and most diverse ever, including a composer and dramaturg in addition to playwrights and directors); New Georges Supported Productions, in which we provide mentorship, fiscal sponsorship, resources and an institutional platform to affiliated artists who are producing their work independently such as Winter Millers No One Is Forgotten and Corinne Donlys Orchid Receipt Service (2-3 artists/projects per year);Space grants/special projects: artist-initiated readings or workshop presentations created or developed in The Room, including Deadline Readings, which encourage playwrights to finish early drafts of new scripts by promising an initial hearing (3-4 per year); Playwright/Director Jumpstart and Designer Mixer, community-wide events that introduce potential collaborators in a casual context (45 artists annually);Affiliated Artist services including our casting and women/tgnc designer databases; monthly e-mail blasts regarding opportunities at New Georges and theaters nationwide; promotion for affiliated artist projects through our e-blasts and social media channels.
