Organizations Filed Purposes: PROVIDING VETERINARY AID AND EDUCATION TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF ANIMALS AND THEIR COMMUNITIES WORLDWIDE.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR ANIMALS AND PEOPLE (GAAP), OUR HEALTHY PETS PROGRAM CLINIC IN VALDIVIA, CHILE PROVIDED VETERINARY SERVICES TO OVER 1,000 DOGS AND CATS FOR A VARIETY OF HEALTH CONCERNS INCLUDING DISEASE, TRAUMATIC INJURIES, WOUNDS, EMERGENCY SURGERIES AND PREVENTATIVE VACCINATIONS. WE ALSO SUPPORTED A TELEMEDICINE PROGRAM IN TODOS SANTOS, GUATEMALA, WHERE 190 DOGS WERE VISITED IN THEIR HOMES FOR A VARIETY OF MEDICAL NEEDS. OUR EMERGENCY FUND ASSISTED 29 VULNERABLE FAMILIES WITH 100% COVERAGE OF URGENT MEDICAL NEEDS. WE ALSO SUPPORTED A SCOPING TRIP TO PERU AS WELL AS A WORKSHOP SETTING UP THE FRAMEWORK FOR A FUTURE RABIES ERADICATION PROGRAM WITH THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH.

WE SUPPORTED THE LAIKIPIA RABIES VACCINATION CAMPAIGN, BASED IN LAIKIPIA COUNTY, KENYA, A RURAL REGION WHERE PASTORAL COMMUNITIES LIVE AMONGST SOME OF THE HIGHEST BIODIVERSITY IN EAST AFRICA. THIS CLOSE PROXIMITY TO WILDLIFE CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE RABIES CAN EASILY JUMP FROM WILDLIFE TO DOMESTIC DOGS TO HUMANS. IN MOST LAIKIPIA COMMUNITIES, HOUSEHOLDS CANNOT AFFORD TO VACCINATE THEIR DOGS AGAINST RABIES AND LACK ACCESS TO HUMAN POST-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS. THE LAIKIPIA RABIES VACCINATION CAMPAIGN AIMS TO ERADICATE RABIES IN THE COUNTY BY VACCINATING 70% OF ALL DOMESTIC DOGS. THE CAMPAIGN OFFERS EVERYONE EQUAL ACCESS TO PREVENTATIVE RABIES TREATMENT, RAISES AWARENESS ABOUT THE DEADLY DISEASE, AND EDUCATES PEOPLE ON HUMANE ANIMAL TREATMENT. THE CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN OPERATING FOR FIVE YEARS AND HAS TREATED THOUSANDS OF DOGS AND REACHED HUNDREDS OF COMMUNITIES. WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND RABIES VACCINATIONS AND EDUCATION TO HUNDREDS OF COMMUNITIES IN LAIKIPIA COUNTY WHO WOULD OTHERWISE RECEIVE NO PREVENTATIVE RABIES CARE. OUR GOAL, IN LINE WITH GUIDANCE FROM THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION, IS TO ELIMINATE RABIES FROM LAIKIPIA COUNTY BY VACCINATING 70% OF DOMESTIC DOGS IN THE COUNTY FOR THREE CONSECUTIVE YEARS. THIS WILL ERADICATE THE DISEASE FROM DOMESTIC DOG POPULATIONS AND, BY EXTENSION, HUMANS. WE WERE ABLE TO REACH DOZENS MORE COMMUNITIES THAN PRIOR YEARS THROUGH THE PURCHASE OF RABIES VACCINES, FUEL TO REACH RURAL COMMUNITIES, AND MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO ENSURE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SAFETY AND SANITATION FOR BOTH VOLUNTEERS AND DOMESTIC DOGS. WE WERE ABLE TO RECRUIT MORE VOLUNTEERS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TEAMS ON THE GROUND IN COMMUNITIES ADMINISTERING VACCINATIONS. WE WERE ALSO ABLE TO TRAIN VOLUNTEERS ON USING A MOBILE APPLICATION TO RECORD DATA ABOUT VACCINATIONS AND OWNER INFORMATION. THIS HELPED ACCELERATE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF OUR PROGRESS TOWARDS OUR GOALS, POTENTIAL SETBACKS THAT TEAMS WERE FACING, AND INFORM SUBSEQUENT CAMPAIGN WEEKENDS. IMPORTANTLY, THIS GRANT ALSO ALLOWED US TO PURCHASE HUMAN POST-EXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS FOR VOLUNTEER VETERINARIANS IN THE EVENT OF BITES OR SCRATCHES DURING VACCINATION. THIS VACCINE IS CRUCIAL FOR THE HEALTH OF VOLUNTEERS AND ALLOWS THEM TO BETTER DO THEIR WORK OF VACCINATING DOGS. IN TOTAL, 13,185 DOGS AND CATS WERE VACCINATED AGAINST RABIES IN 2019.

WE WERE ABLE TO SUPPORT THE VETERINARY NEEDS OF LIBERIA'S ONLY CHIMPANZEE RESCUE OPERATION, LIBERIA CHIMPANZEE RESCUE & PROTECTION, REHABILITATING 35 CHIMPANZEES WHO HAVE BEEN CAPTURED FOR THE ILLEGAL BUSHMEAT AND PET TRADE. VETERINARY EQUIPMENT, SUPPLIES, FOOD AND MEDICINE WERE ALSO PURCHASED.
