Visiting Neighbors, Inc.is a not - for - profit organization established in 1972, to serve the homebound elderly of New York and is dedicated to keeping them a vital part of the community.
The organization provides seven core services as follows: (1) Shopping & Escort - provides shopping and errand services. Volunteers provided approximately 3,100 units of service (each one way trip). During the pandemic (March June 2020) shopping for seniors to get access to food and essential supplies, as well as errands were done in contactless ways (in comparison to before the pandemic, when seniors most often would often go with a volunteer). Safety protocols were established and constantly updated to keep everyone as safe as possible. Volunteers also escorted seniors on therapeutic walks. When medical professionals started seeing patients again and procedures started to happen again, volunteers escorted seniors to and from those medical appointments and procedures. (2) Friendly visits - provides the elderly clients with companion visits. Volunteers provided approximately 6,600 visits.(3) Health Advocacy - provides support during clients hospital stays and follow up at home after hospital stay, emergency preparedness, in-home safety checks, information on free and low cost health services, health counseling, liaison between the client and health care providers, providing health education materials and emotional support and encouragement, approximately 1010 hours.(4) Wellness programs - info & activities to promote healthy living and wellness, approximately 3,330 contract hours.(5) Information and Referral Services - volunteers respond to individuals requesting information and guidance. During the year, 3,800 calls were received and responded to.(6) Telephone Reassurance - approximately 8,660 hours.(7) Special Occasions - provides visits, calls and mailings for birthdays and holidays.
