THE ORGANIZATION'S PURPOSE IS TO PROMOTE THE HIGHEST STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE IN THE THEATER AND THE PERFORMING ARTS, PRIMARILY THROUGH THE PRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCE OF PLAYS AND MUSICALS FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC, AS WELL AS VARIOUS DEVELOPMENTAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES.
THEATRICAL PRODUCTION & OPERATIONS (REGULAR & EXTENDED, INCLUDING ARTISTIC STAFF AND FACILITIES).DURING THE YEAR ENDED JUNE 30, 2020, THE ORGANIZATION PRESENTED A SEASON OF PRODUCTIONS AT THE VIVIAN BEAUMONT AND MITZI E. NEWHOUSE THEATERS AT LINCOLN CENTER, AS WELL AS WORKS BY YOUNG AND EMERGING ARTISTS (THE LCT3 PROGRAM) AT THE CLAIRE TOW THEATER AT LINCOLN CENTER.NOT-FOR-PROFIT THEATRICAL PRESENTATIONS TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC DURING THE YEAR INCLUDED:"MY FAIR LADY" (BEAUMONT THEATER, 8 ADD'L PERFS., ADD'L ATTENDANCE 8,223), "IN THE GREEN" (LCT3 AT THE TOW, 38 ADD'L PERFS., ADD'L ATTENDANCE 3,965), "THE ROLLING STONE" (NEWHOUSE THEATER, 64 ADD'L PERFS., ADD'L ATTENDANCE 10,732),"POWER STRIP" (LCT3 AT THE TOW, 50 PERFS., ATTENDANCE 4,064), "GREATER CLEMENTS" (NEWHOUSE THEATER, 75 PERFS., ATTENDANCE 16,665), "THE HEADLANDS" (LCT3 AT THE TOW, 36 PERFS., ATTENDANCE 3,343), "INTIMATE APPAREL" (NEWHOUSE THEATER, 15 PERFS., ATTENDANCE 3,250).PRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCES OF "THE HEADLANDS" (LCT3 AT THE TOW), "INTIMATE APPAREL" (NEWHOUSE THEATER), AND "FLYING OVER SUNSET" (BEAUMONT THEATER) WERE SUSPENDED IN MARCH 2020 BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, AT WHICH TIME THE GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK CLOSED ALL THEATERS AND PROHIBITED PUBLIC ASSEMBLY FOR AN INDEFINITE PERIOD.
MARKETING, EDUCATION & OUTREACH.THE THEATER'S MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM IS ITS PRINCIPAL MEANS OF AUDIENCE DEVELOPMENT. ITS EXPENSES ARE THE COSTS OF SERVICING A GROUP OF APPROXIMATELY 22,000 LINCOLN CENTER THEATER MEMBERS, EACH OF WHOM, AFTER PAYMENT OF AN ANNUAL FEE, IS ENTITLED TO PURCHASE ONE TICKET TO EACH OF THE THEATER'S PRODUCTIONS AT A SUBSTANTIAL DISCOUNT (SUBJECT IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES TO AVAILABILITY) AND TO RECEIVE SPECIAL INFORMATION AND SERVICE IN THE ORDERING OF TICKETS. OVER 7,500 STUDENT AND YOUNGER MEMBERS, UNDER THE LINCTIX PROGRAM, ARE ENTITLED TO MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS AND DISCOUNTS WITHOUT THE PAYMENT OF AN ANNUAL FEE.THE THEATER'S EDUCATION PROGRAM (OPEN STAGES) FOR CHILDREN FROM LOW-INCOME FAMILIES ATTENDING NEW YORK CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS CONSISTS OF A SERIES OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS FOR TEACHERS AND CLASSROOM WORKSHOPS LED BY TEACHING ARTISTS. EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES IN THE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM ARE CONNECTED WITH THE THEATER'S PRODUCTIONS (FOR WHICH FREE TICKETS ARE PROVIDED TO STUDENTS AND TEACHERS) AND THE PERFORMING ARTS IN GENERAL. OPEN STAGES INCLUDES THREE ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS. THE SHAKESPEARE PROGRAM IS A SEMESTER-LONG STUDY THAT CULMINATES WITH A STUDENT PRODUCTION OF AN ABRIDGED VERSION OF A SHAKESPEARE PLAY. THE LEAD (LEARNING ENGLISH AND DRAMA) PROJECT WAS DEVISED TO HELP ENL STUDENTS IN HIGH SCHOOLS AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS IMPROVE THEIR ENGLISH-LANGUAGE SPEAKING SKILLS BY UTILIZING THEATER TECHNIQUES. THE SONGWRITING IN THE SCHOOLS PROGRAM, DESIGNED TO ENHANCE THE WRITING CURRICULUM IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, BRINGS YOUNG PROFESSIONAL LYRICISTS AND COMPOSERS INTO CLASSROOMS FOR NINE-SESSION RESIDENCIES IN WHICH THEY TEACH STUDENTS HOW TO WRITE LYRICS FROM A CHARACTER'S POINT OF VIEW AND THEN SET THEIR WORDS TO MUSIC. ALL EDUCATION PROGRAM COMPONENTS REACH A TOTAL OF APPROXIMATELY 4,300 STUDENTS AND 80 TEACHERS EACH YEAR.
SPECIAL ARTISTIC PROJECTS.SPECIAL ARTISTIC PROJECTS INCLUDE DEVELOPMENTAL WORKSHOPS AND READINGS OF NEW PLAYS AND MUSICALS (THE PLAYWRIGHTS PROGRAM), WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS FOR THE TRAINING OF NEW STAGE DIRECTORS (THE DIRECTORS LAB), COMMISSIONS FOR NEW PLAYS AND OPERAS, AND THE PUBLICATION OF THE LINCOLN CENTER THEATER REVIEW, A JOURNAL OF THE DRAMA. GRANTS AND AWARDS WITHIN THIS PROGRAM SERVICE ARE THE CULLMAN AWARD FOR CREATIVE ACHIEVEMENT.
