Organizations Filed Purposes: NEWBURGH ARMORY UNITY CENTER (NAUC) WAS FORMED TO MANAGE THE NEWBURGH ARMORY AND TO CREATE COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS TO COLLECTIVELY INCREASE CAPACITY FOR PROGRAMMING AIMED PRIMARILY AT INNER CITY YOUTH AND FAMILIES. PROGRAMS AT THE NAUC FOCUS ON ATHLETICS, EDUCATION, AND THE ADVANCEMENT OF BUSINESS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY OF NEWBURGH AND STUDENTS OF THE NEWBURGH ENLARGED CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT.

SATURDAY MORNING ENRICHMENT PROGRAMING:THE SATURDAY MORNING ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (SMEP) IS THE CORNERSTONE OF THE NAUC'S MISSION TO PROVIDE HIGH-QUALITY ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT AND EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY PROGRAMS TO THE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES OF THE NEWBURGH ENLARGED CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT (NECSD). IT IS POWERED BY AN INTEGRATED ECOSYSTEM OF PARTNERSHIPS AND COLLABORATIONS INVOLVING THE CITY, COUNTY, AND STATE OFFICIALS AND AGENCIES, CARETAKERS AND STUDENTS, AND A NETWORK OF COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, AS WELL AS HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS. SMEP CONTINUES TO SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENT DYNAMIC PROGRAMMING ACROSS A WIDE RANGE OF DISCIPLINES. THE PROGRAM IS OFFERED YEAR-ROUND IN FOUR QUARTERLY SESSIONS. REGISTRATION IS OFFERED FOR EACH OF THE SESSIONS THAT RUN ON A 12-WEEK CYCLE DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR AND SLIGHTLY SHORTER SESSIONS THROUGH THE SUMMER. EACH STUDENT MUST REGISTER AT THE START OF A NEW SESSION. NEW COURSES ARE HIGHLIGHTED ON THE PROGRAM'S COURSE CATALOG FOR EACH SESSION'S REGISTRATION. REGISTERING STUDENTS CAN ENROLL IN UP TO FOUR CLASSES THAT RUN ON ONE-HOUR INTERVALS BETWEEN THE HOURS OF 8 AM AND 12 PM. ALL PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE A SNACK FACILITATED BY NAUC STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS DURING THE 10 AM CLASS. SUPPLEMENTAL REFRESHMENTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE AT THE NAUC CAF, WHICH HAS BEEN IN OPERATION SINCE 2018.THE REAL WORLD LITERACY AND EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT FOR THE 21ST CENTURY PROGRAM (RWLEECP):THE RWLEECP HAS EXPANDED ON ITS CORE MISSION TO PROVIDE THE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES OF THE NEWBURGH ENLARGED CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT WITH HIGH-QUALITY ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT, STEM AND EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY PROGRAMMING.EARLY LITERACY LEAP TUTORING AND INTEGRATION WITH SATURDAY PROGRAMMING:SINCE 2013, MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE HAS OFFERED TO TUTOR, AT NAUC, NEWBURGH CHILDREN IN GRADES K-6, WHO ARE PERFORMING BELOW GRADE LEVEL IN DEVELOPING THEIR READING AND LITERACY SKILLS IN SCHOOL. THE PROGRAM WORKS CLOSELY WITH SCHOOLS TO REACH OUT TO THOSE CHILDREN WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM INDIVIDUAL TUTORING IN READING AND WRITING. FIVE DIFFERENT GRADUATE CLASSES IN LITERACY WITH FIELDWORK REQUIREMENTS MAKE UP THIS PROGRAM SO THAT THE NAUC CAN OFFER TO TUITION IN THE FALL, SPRING, AND SUMMER SESSIONS. ADDITIONALLY, SOME OF THE CLASSES ARE PAIRED SO THAT STUDENT PARTICIPANTS CAN GET TUTORING HELP TWICE A WEEK, WHICH HAS BEEN FOUND TO PROVIDE GREATER GAINS WITH CHILDREN THAN OFFERING A WEEKLY PROGRAM.
