Organizations Filed Purposes:
We seek to educate the public about Burleighs unique contributions in music and support performances of his music
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic's brutal impact on performing artists, the Burleigh Society established a fund to support all of the musicians who have contributed to the organization's public events. This is a population of musicians who lost tens of thousands of dollars in income due to force majeure of their contracts with performing arts institutions throughout the world. The Society put forth matching funds from our budget, and solicited funds from the public through a month long online and phone campaign. The Burleigh Society is proud to have raised funds to distribute a grant of $1,000 to each of the artists on the organisation's roster.
The 2020 tour of the world-renowned St. Olaf Choir, led by conductor Dr. Anton Armstrong, included a performance at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. Credited to inspiration from The Burleigh Society, the choir performed works by Harry T. Burleigh on the program. This was a historic moment when Armstrong, himself one of the leading black choral conductors in the world, followed in Burleigh's legacy for this concert. He invited The Burleigh Society community to attend the concert. Attendees were comprised of a group of choir conductors in the NYC area, all underrepresented either by gender or racial identity. The Society also distributed a small gift to each member of the St. Olaf Choir in honor of their performance of Burleigh's works.
In celebration and support of St. Philip's Church, Harry T. Burleigh's first church home in NYC and a friend institution to the Burleigh Society, the Burleigh Society donated to the Church's fundraising campaign on behalf of the new rector Rev. Canon Terence Alexander Lee.
