FOUNDED IN 1947, THE GEORGE EASTMAN MUSEUM IS THE WORLD'S OLDEST PHOTOGRAPHY MUSEUM, IS HOME TO ONE OF THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FILM ARCHIVES IN THE UNITED STATES, LOCATED ON THE HISTORIC ROCHESTER ESTATE OF ENTREPRENEUR AND PHILANTHORPIST GEORGE EASTMAN, THE PIONEER OF POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY AND A LEADER IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MOTION PICUTRE FILM. ITS HOLDINGS COMPRISE OF MORE THAN 400,000 PHOTOGRAPHS; 28,000 MOTION PICTURE FILMS; THE WORLD'S PREEMINENT COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CINEMATOGRAPHIC TECHNOLOGY; ONE OF THE LEADING LIBRARIES OF BOOKS RELATED TO PHOTOGRAPHY AND CINEMA; AND EXTENSIVE HOLDINGS OF DOCUMENTS AND OTHER OBJECTS RELATED TO GEORGE EASTMAN. AS A RESEARCH AND TEACHING INSTITUTION, THE MUSEUM HAS AN ACTIVE PUBLISHING PROGRAM AND MAKES CRITICAL CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE FIELDS OF FILM PRESERVATION AND PHOTOGRAPHIC CONSERVATION.
MUSEUM OPERATING ACTIVITIES AND FUNCTIONS: NEARLY 150,000 PEOPLE VISITED GEORGE EASTMAN MUSEUM IN 2019, EXPERIENCING PHOTOGRAPH EXHIBITIONS, DOCENT-LED, SELF-GUIDED AND MOBILE TOURS OF THE HISTORIC HOUSE AND GARDENS, FILM SCREENINGS, A DISCOVERY ROOM FOR INTERACTIVE LEARNING, AND THE MUSEUM STORE AND CAFE. ONLINE, MORE THAN 280,000 PEOPLE VISITED THE MUSEUM'S ONLINE COLLECTIONS AND WEBSITE; THERE WERE 415,000 VIEWS AND LISTENERS OF OUR AUDIO AND VIDEO MATERIALS. THE MUSEUM'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE L. JEFFERY SELZNICK SCHOOL OF FILM PRSERVATION.
COLLECTIONS, PRESERVATION AND EXHIBITIONS: THE MUSEUM IS HOME TO THE WORLD'S MOST SIGNIFICANT COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS, CINEMA, AND RELATED TECHNOLOGICAL EQUIPMENT AND LIBRARY HOLDINGS, AS WELL AS THE GEORGE EASTMAN LEGACY PHOTOGRAPHY COLLECTIONS. IN 2019, THE MUSEUM ACQUIRED NEARLY 550 OBJECTS, INSTALLED SEVEN EXHIBITIONS ONSITE, AND LENT COLLECTION OBJECTS TO NUMEROUS MUSEUMS AROUND THE WORLD. IN ADDITION THE MUSEUM IS ONE OF THE LEADING MOTION PICTURE ARCHIVES IN THE WORLD, HOME TO MORE THAN 28,000 FILM TITLES, 3 MILLION OBJECTS OF MOTION PICTURE EPHEMERA, A FILM SCREENING PROGRAM, AND ACTIVE PRESERVATION PROGRAM. THE MUSEUM RUNS AN ACTIVE BOOK PUBLISHING PROGRAM FOCUSED ON CATALOGS OF EXHIBITIONS ORGANIZED BY THE MUSEUM AND SUBJECTS RELATED TO THE MUSEUM'S COLLECTIONS. IN 2019, THE MUSEUM PUBLISHED TWO BOOKS.
