Student Literacy: The Organization supports literacy development through the Teachers' Choice program. Through Teachers' Choice, educators can apply for up to 175 new books for a creative project outside of their normal curriculum. At the end of the project, students keep the books to build their home libraries. During the 2019 school year, the Organization provided 1,600 books to teachers through this program. In total, around 44,000 books have been provided to students since the launch of the program in 2006.This program is primarily supported through contributions.
Arts Education: In 2003, the Organization launched the Spring For Music program. Through Spring for Music, the Organization has received nearly 3,000 instruments on behalf of city students. Over the years, the Organization helped foster many student musicians through access not only to instruments and performance opportunities, but also to summer music lessons (50 annually). In response to new challenges in the District, the Organization has expanded their program to include support for visual arts, theater, and dance. Through the Arts Fund, the Organization also provides a college-bound student musician with a brand-new quality instrument for use in college auditions and beyond. This program is primarily supported through contributions.
College Access: REF leads a community initiative, Rochester College Access Network, which brings together higher-ed institutions, community organizations, counselors, and community members to set community goals around college-going and align resources to break down the barriers city students face on the road to post-secondary education. The impact of the Organization's efforts has been significant during the 2018-19 school year. Nearly half of all city and charter school seniors completing a FAFSA did so through the Organization's support. The Organization received national recognition from the National College Access Network in fall 2019 for being a leader in improving FAFSA completion.College tours: The Organization also offer college tours for more than 200 students, primarily sophomores, giving them the opportunity to visit a campus, learn about career paths, and programs such as the NY Educational Opportunity Program that provides significant financial and academic support to first-generation college students.Workshops: The Organization provides additional workshops to students and parents on topics including searching for scholarships, decoding college financial aid offers, to understanding college life from current college students. This program is primarily supported through contributions.
