Organizations Filed Purposes:
To establish and maintain programs and ministries that address the physical, social, and spiritual needs of the poor as well as those who are under-resourced.
Residential Services seek to comprehensively meet the needs of the poor in a manner that dignifies and strengthens the individual, the family, and the community. Services include a 76-bed Men's Facility and a 37-bed Women's and Children's shelter. In addition to receiving shelter and clothing, residents may participate in the "Bridges to Freedom" discipleship and recovery program which includes life-skills training, vocational training, and numerous classes designed specifically to foster the journey from poverty to sustainability.
The Food Services team provides three meals a day to shelter residents and dinner meals for the community. Bagged meals are available 24/7 at the Men's Shelter. Good nutrition and learning success go hand in hand as evidenced by numerous studies indicating students who eat a healthy breakfast and/or lunch are more successful learners than those who do not. The Food Services department has a goal of providing men and women with healthy, well-balanced meals. Additionally, we strive to provide nutrition education to men and women so that they are able to make healthy food choices throughout their lives.
Education and Career services are comprised of several programs, including: Schenectady Bridges, Career Training Center, Employer Resource Network, Downtown Ambassadors, and Scholarships. Schenectady Bridges is a community-wide collaboration which provides training for those working with the less fortunate in order to make those efforts more effective. The Career Training Center offers shelter residents and community members job-readiness training. Employer Resource Network (ERN) offers area employers an on-site success coach targeting the needs of the working poor in an effort to increase employee retention. The Downtown Ambassador program assists in the ongoing revitalization of our city by helping to create a welcoming atmosphere for downtown visitors, providing entry level employment opportunities and teaching hospitality skills. Note: The ERN program was transferred to another local agency beginning on July 1, 2020.
